1-85 is opened
dirough state
A new milestone in highway
■ess has been reached in
Carolina.
The last remaining incomplete
of Interstate Route 85
from U. S. 29 near Piedmont to
U. S. 178 near Anderson, was
officially opened to traffic at 8
o’clock Tuesday morning, Sep
tember 8, Chief Highway Comm
issioner Silas N. Pearman an
nounced. This means full traffic
use of the freeway from the Geor
gia line to the North Carolina
line, a distance of 117 miles.
The 14 mile section between U.
S. Route 178 and U. S. Route 29
has been nearly enough completed
to permit full usage by traffic,
except that special speed limita
tions will be enforced. Mainly,
shoulder work remains to be com
pleted.
Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Singley have
moved to 1209 Academy St. to
make their home.

Jaycee-ettes plan Mental health Education for
many activities
Newberry Jaycee-ettes have sev
eral projects to keep them busy,
and these were discussed at a
meeting held last Tuesday at the
home of Mrs. Randolph Wilson.
Club members were asked to
help chaperone the Back-to-School
dance at the Youth Center the
past Saturday night. The Key
Club of the high school co-spon
sored the dance with the Jaycees.
Px-esident Mrs. Mac Fennell an
nounced that the club will receive
the first publication of cook books,
compiled by the Jaycee-ettes in
late October.
Mi-s. Grady Carter outlined final
plans for decollating the stage for
the Junior Miss Beauty Pageant
which will be held Wednesday,
September 23. Mrs. Billy Senn is
planning a get-acquainted drop-in
for the contestants on Monday,
September 21 from 6:30 to 7:00
p.m., just prior to dress rehear
sal. Mrs. Fennell will have an af
ternoon tea for the contestants
and judges on Wednesday, Sep
tember 23 at 4 p.m.
Since the club will not have a
i*egular meeting in October, Mrs.
Billy West was appointed chairman
of the Halloween masquerade
which will be Saturday, October
31. The dance will be open to Jay
cees and their wives and the loca
tion will be announced at a later
date.

Mental Health clinic as discussion
leaders, on Tuesday, September 22
at 8 p.m. in the Community Hall.
Dr. H. Agarde, psyciatrist, and
Dr. Charles Robinson, clinical
psychologist, will present full de
tails concerning the mental health
conditions in this area and the
services being supplied by this
public clinic. Newberry is one of
the six counties included in the
area to be sex-viced by this state-
operated clinic. It will be most
helpful for citizens to know how
this clinic can effectively serve the
needs of every family.
Both the county and state Men
tal Health Associations will be in
cluded as community service agen
cies to be supported through the
United Fund campaign to be car
ried on this fall. Every endeavor
will be made by them to make
their programs of services most
beneficial to the public.
Dr. Walter H. Beck, president
of the county Mental Health As
sociation, and Professor F. Scott
Elliott, president of the Newberry
Civic League, urge the citizens
from throughout the county to at
tend this open community meet
ing. There will also be a musical
program, and free informative lit
erature on mental health will be
made available.

Vets orphans
By the opening day of school,
20 children of living veterans of
South Cax-olina who are totally
and pex-manently disabled from
sex-vice-connected causes have been
approved by the Veterans Admin
istration for study under the War
Ox-phans’ Education Assistance
Program.

ble for assistance under the pro
gram in pursuing their college
courses, or non-college courses
leading to gainful employment, J.

Officer of the Veterans Adminis
tration Regional Office, Columbia,
said today.
Extension of the program to
children other than those of de
ceased service-connected veterans
has been in effect only since July
7 when President Johnson signed
the new law.
This new law extends the pro
gram to children of veterans of
the Spanish-American war, World
War I, World War II, the Korean
Conflict, and the peacetime service
who have been permanently and
totally disabled by illness or in
jury attributable either to their
wax-time service or, in the case of
peacetime veterans, to disabilities
received as the direct result of the
performance of active sei-vice.
Eligible children receive bene
fits up to $110 a month for full
time enrollment, and proportion
ately lower amounts for part-
time study, while pursuing their
courses selected with the aid of
counseling experts in the VA.
Courses on the high school level
are not permitted.
Age limits are set at 18 to 23,
but in certain cases exceptions
may be made. Handicapped child
ren who may have to take special
training may start at age 14. At
the same time, studies may be
pursued after age 23 in certain
cases, like students who serve
with the Armed Forces before
their 23rd birthday. Marriage
does not preclude participation by
those otherwise qualified.
If the eligible person is of legal
age he or she may file applica
tion with the VA Regional Office
at Columbia. If not, the parent or
guardian must apply, Mr. With

met with other officers at a break
fast meeting, held at the Wiseman
hotel early Wednesday morning
for a briefing and discussion of
the forthcoming United Fund
Drive.
In attendance with the chairmen
and officers was Robert Carlson,
S. C. Field Representative of the
Carolina’s United Fund. -
The Divisional Chairmen pres
ent were Hart Jordan, Industrial
Division; Mrs. J. W. Earhardt,
Residential Division; Keitt Pur
cell, Commercial Division; Jabbo
Folk, Public Employees; Ralph
Watkins, School Division; Tom

The various divisional chair
men will soon start organizing;
their divisions by getting others
to serve with them on the drive
that is scheduled to start October
26th.
A gxeat deal of interest and en
thusiasm has been shown in the
prospect of the United Fund that
will serve the purpose for several
campaign dxives that are sponsor
ed throughout the year.
The public is urged to support
the United Fund campaign and to
participate in whatever office or
position one may be asked to
serve.
It has been pointed out that the
success of the newly formed or
ganization will depend upon the
whole county’s support.
