The Joanna Way, the very hand
some and readable magazine of
The Joanna Cotton Mills Co., of
Joanna, carrier on the front cover
of the April issue a very fine and
appropriate picture of General
Douglas MacArthur.
It is in accord with the Reg-
nery tradition to endorse and sup
port worthy causes and efforts.
The late William H. Regnery, a
quiet, but immensely effective ad
vocate of real patriotism and all
helpful endeavors, lives today in
the life of Walter Regnery who
talks very little but pours his
great talents into his remarkably
successful business with under
standing of all the great family
of helpers who constitute a real
fellowship.
The picture of General MacAr
thur is a handsome one and will
gladden the hearts of all who
hold in admiration the great sol
dier.
“Render unto Caesar the things
which are Caesar’s; and unto God
the things that are God’s”.
You recall, I know, these words
of Jesus, in both Matthew and
Mark. Do you remember the oc
casion for what Jesus said? The
Pharisees, according to Matthew,
“took counsel how they might en
tangle Jesus. They sent men to
beguile Jesus with nice language
and what was intended to impress
him with their pious devotion to
the Hebrew segregation which was
so strict that even when the He
brew mob condemned Jesus before
Pilate the Hebrews would not
enter Pilate’s sanctum because
Pilate, the Governor, Caesar’s
representative, was not a Hebrew.
Pilate came out to them, as you
recall.
A little practical lesson about
segregation. "Render unto Cae
sar”: Now what was all that
about? The ancient Hebrew prac
ticed a strict segregation. Jesus
himself was born into a Hebrew
family. So far as I recall He never
insisted on abrogating the prac
tice of strict segregation. So far
as I remember He did not insist
on fellowship in the Synagogues
between Hebrews and Samaritans,
who were half Hebrews; all oth
ers were rated as heathen, even
the refined Greek and the world-
conquering Roman.
I am aware of the Jew who was
rescued bv the Samaritan, known
to us as the Good Samaritan. But
that does not apply to us as a re
proach for in our State White and
Colored frequently cooperate in
cases of suffering and sorrow.
Remember the Hebrews would
not go into Pilate's sanctum.
Jesus did not deviate from the
essentials of salvation by harping
on or against segi*egation in Syn
agogues.
Although the Hebrews were so
strict in segregation that they
would not go before Pilate, the
Roman Governor, for fear of pol
lution but when shown the coin
with Caesar’s likeness by those
who hoped Jesus would repudiate
the coin as coming from unbeliev
ers, He distinguished between
purely religious practice and mat
ters of government by holding
the coin and asking: “whose is
this image and superscription?”
There was a clear distinction be
tween religious ceremony and fun
damental virtue.
We recall, of course, that the
Samaritan, hated by the orthodox
Hebrews, cared for the man rob
bed and wounded by the roadside.
That was real charity between
man and man, not a religious cer
emony.
“But seek ye first the Kingdom
of God and His righteousness and
all these things shall be added un
to you.”
Some of our religious people
are running afield thinking the
church is the place to solve social
problems.
The church is the temple of
spiritual regeneration, not a
platform of political experimenta
tion.
If you are interested in Sociol
ogy you must be impressed with
the growth and development of
man during the ages of conflict,
war upheavals and other disas
ters. I know of no greater triumph
of men over disaster than that of
our grandfathers and their fath
ers, following the days of the
Civil war. And the amazing thing
is that in this great growth and
development our Colored people
have shared remarkable.
When I say that side by side the
Colored man, has prospered along
with the white man. Not all Col
ored men have prospered, but not
all White men have prospered.
Consider the American Indian:
living by himself he has advanced
very little; but the Colored man,
working for and with the White
man has very notably advanced
beyond the Colored man anywhere
else in the world.
The political chase of the Col
ored man by National Administra
tion is a colossal effort of hypoc
risy bordering on stupidity. Men
grow; and they grow by work, not
by handouts. No one really devel
ops from being spoon-fed except
babies and helpless invalids.
The Great Master did not dev
iate from His divine ministry to
engage in all the political turmoil
of his day.
He could have swept aside all
the doings of evil men but He
concentrated on the spiritual as
pect of His ministry, not the foi
bles and fusses of the day. As He
said: “Thinkest thou that I can
not now pray to my Father, and
he shall presently give me mox-e
than twelve legions of angels?”
Yes, He had all might, majesty,
power and dominion but He left
us to develop inward grace to
meet and solve the problems of
life, without external force and
without political manipulation.
The great sociological problem
of America is to find useful, pro
ductive employment for all able-
bodied men. Of course if all the
women should retire all the men
could find employment. Whether
the work of the women could be
done as efficiently by the men is
another question. I don’t know and
I don’t venture to do more than
think in numbers of workers.
I venture the suggestion that
our schools and colleges, for white
and colored, are not preparing all
students for useful and remun
erative employment. We need men
for every useful type of work, but
our purely academic training fre
quently leaves one no choice but
to try to enter over-crowed occu
pations or to join the agitators
for some sort of unproductive sub
sidy or, else, join the great band
of idle.
The kingdom of God was in
finitely above all earthly consid
erations of time, place and meth
ods.
Jesus, with heavenly matters to
engage Him would not be beguiled
into becoming embroiled in mat
ters of mere temporal concern.
It is worth contemplating that
we should have a spiritual conse
cration pre-eminently. “Seek ye
first the Kingdom of God,’, He said.
The Kingdom of God is above pal
try politics and misguided zeal
for political manipulations.
Things of the moment didn’t
merit His attention except causes
of affliction. He was concerned
for the immortal spirit and etern
ity.
Just how cotton or other com
modities stored in State ware
houses can disappear I can’t see.
If we assume that a record is
kept of every item stored and
then a record of every item taken
out how can there be big losses?
If the problem isn't one of simple
arithmetic it must follow that
the disappearing bales of cotton
or other products must be taken
by ghost? or spirits.
Since the old State Dispensary
no longer flourishes in Columbia
I don?t see where the ghosts and
spirits come from.
Friends, this is a remarkable
day isn’t it? We read one day
that a man walks into a bank in
broad daylight and walks out with
thousands of dollars, all unlawful
ly extracted, you understand. Then
auother borrows millions of dol
lars on receipts from a storage
plant, without having the stuff
stored. Then now, here in the
South Carolina, we read that cot
ton, in bales, you know, is stored
in a State warehouse and then
takes leave and walks out, no rec
ord kept of what goes in? Well
what record is kept of what goes
out, eh? How, now!
I have stood, open-mouthed, at
times observing the tricks of
sleight of hand geniuses making
pocket books disappear and re
appear; but I can’t reconcile that
with a sleight of hand operation
that can make bales of cotton dis
appear. Still, I wonder if some
smoothe artist will shuffle his
cardds and cause the bales to re
appear. I wonder. If an artist can
move and remove and return
bales of cotton at will I wonder if,
with a little practice, he could
wave his handerchief or magicians
wand and make a railway train
disappear when it is blocking a
street or highway.
This is a day of wonders; I’ve
even seen weird things done on
mathematical computers in the
hands of neophytes, but a bale of
cotton is a bale of cotton, or was,
a long time ago.
Although Jesus responded to
calls for help He regarded all
these appeals, afflictions, troubles,
fears, discriminations as mere
matters of the moment, whereas
He was on earth to teach and em
phasize the immortality of man
and the Eternity which faced every
soul: a matter of the moment as
compared with endless eternity.
So, in conclusion I repeat: (As
an ex-teacher I know the effect
iveness of repitition). I repeat*
“Seek ye first the kingdom of
God”; and seek it diligently, in
telligently and prayerfully and
don’t be bemused by extraneous
claims.
