T HE COMING of the New Year
is the signal for a 12-month
countdown by those who will be
retiring next December 31st.
It is a time for a pre-retirement
calendar.
Here is one, designed particu
larly for those who will be mov
ing away with their pensions:
JANUARY — Get thorough
health examinations for both man
and wife in order to correct any
ailments while still in the com
pany’s health insurance program.
Buy—and plan to pay for before
the salary stops—any expensive
items such as furniture, car, and
appliances that will be needed.
FEBRUARY—Start grooming a
person of your choice to take
over your job, if it’s a key job
(this can keep you a hero after
you’re gone). Take your vacation,
and spend it all in the town
where you plan to settle . . .
just to condition yourself to the
place and get acquainted.
MARCH—Start quietly tapering
off on the job—there’s no sense
in getting ulcers now—and re
frain from advertising the fact
that your retirement is near. Go
to the nearest Social Security of
fice and determine what your
benefits will be, when the first
check will be mailed, when and
how you should come back and
apply for the benefits.
APRIL—Put your house up for
sale, offering possession next Jan
uary 1st. Shift your investments
into what form you’ll want them
for retirement, to get used to the
new schedule of dividends.
MAY — Start cultivating the
children a little better. Start
cleaning out the attic and base
ment. Start packing the things
you aren’t using. Ask at least
three moving companies to give
you bids on moving your posses
sions, telling them you’ll do the
packing yourself.
JUNE—Start looking for a job,
if you’ll want one. Determine
what businesses and industries
are in your new town.
JULY—Take a three-week leave
from the company (even at loss
of pay), and spend it in your
chosen town.
AUGUST — Write friendly let
ters to everybody you met on
your visit. Adopt now another
one-third of the budget set up
last February. Go to the Internal
Revenue Service and determine
what income taxes will be on
your pension and dividends.
SEPTEMBER—Buy health in
surance for both husband and
wife (if company policy doesn’t
carry over). Give children, friends
and co-workers some details of
your retirement plans.
OCTOBER—Make out a house
hold work schedule, with duties
divided between husband and
wife.
NOVEMBER — Sign a contract
for the moving of your posses
sions. Put into effect the final
third of your budget
DECEMBER — Set aside $250
for unexpected costs of moving.
You’ll need it Change your ad
dress at Social Security, the pen
sion company, etc., and at the
Post Office. Rent a Post Office
box in the new town for six
months for better assurance you’ll
get your mail.

What About Boy Who 'Likes’ Two Girls?
THE WEEK’S LETTER: T like
a boy very much and he tells me
that he likes me. But, there is
another girl who likes him.
When he is with me, she is al
ways trying to get his attention
so he will go off with her. When
he calls me, he tells me that he
likes me and that he doesn’t like
her. Then, he calls this other girl
and tells her the same thing—that
he likes her and does not like me.
Should I forget this boy since he
calls this other girl and tells her
the same thing he tells me or
what should I do? I like him
very much.’*
OUR REPLY: If you like the
boy very much, you don’t want
to "forget about him” just be
cause he calls another girl on
the telephone — or because he
likes amt her girl too.
Don’t be too concerned about
this other fcirl trying to get his
attention wliile he is with you
—unless he should happen to
give her his attention while he-
is with you. Should this happen,
you should, in a nice and polite-
way, inform him that boys who
take you out and then give their
attention to someone else don’t
take you out very often. You
can say this sincerely — and he
will respect you for it
By the same token, if yon
know this boy is using the same
"line” more than once, then
politely tell him that you doubt
his sincerity. Be sure, however,
that yon have the facts in hand
end me positive that he is telling
the other girl the same things he
tell* yon. The mere fact "some
body" said it was true doesn’t
mean that it is so.
