A winner, who will rep resent Newberry college in the national “Miss Glamour" contest sponsored by Glamour magazine will soon be selected by editors of the Indian. The five finalists are Sandra Arant, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Arant of Saluda; Barbara Dukes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. F. Recent Marriages Kayle Dean Loftis of Paris, France, and Mary Katheryn Whit aker, were married at Newberry on February 22nd by Rev. J. Sheely Died In Columbia James Wilson Sheely of Colum bia died early Sunday afternoon in ■- Columbia hospital. Survivors include his wife, the former Bessie McCarey of New berry; one son, Charles; his moth er, Mrs. Bessie Graham Sheely, and one sister, Miss Elizabeth Sheely of Columbia. Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon from St. Paul’s Lutheran church, Columbia, and interment followed in Elmwood cemetery. 1418 Main Street Phone 276-1422 More Heart Fund Workers Named Dr. J. ' Miss Mary Kathryn Whitaker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Herbert Whitaker of Newberry and Kyle Dean Loftis, of Mount Airy, N. C. and Paris, France, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ephrian Jackson Loftis Jr., of Mount Airy, were married at seven o’clock Saturday evening, February 22, in the First Baptist churdh of Newberry. The Rev. J. Anderson Bass, Jr., officiated. The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a candlelight silk peau de soie long sleeved wedding gown with fitted bodice and por trait neck outlined with alencon lace. The skirt featured a sheath front appliqued also in alencon lace and released in the back by a court train. Her heirloom veil of French silk illusion and Brussels lace was at tached to a crown of seed pearls. Her flowers was a cascade of white phalaenopsis orchids center ed with two white cattleyas which were removed later and worn dn her traveling costume. The bride’s maid of honor and only attendant was her sister. Miss Janice Elizabeth Whitaker. She wore a floor length dress of pale green with matching headpiece and carried a cascade of cymbid- ium orchids. The flower girl, Miss Donna Ann Thornton of Florence, cousin of the bride, wore a dress of yellow organza with matching headpiece. The ushers were Ot; ? L. A musical program was furnish ed by Dana Sawyer, Columbia, or ganist, Miss Kathleen Bray, Mt. Airy, N. C., and Philip Campbell, Newberry, soloist. A reception followed at the home of the bride, 1934 Nance St. The bride’s travel outfit was a navy blue crepe suit with white blouse, Navy accessories and a j white top coat. Mrs. Loftis is a graduate of Newberry high school and New- j berry college and taught at Dun-| can U. Fletcher, Jacksonville Beach Florida. Mr. Loftis graduated from Mt. Airy high school, and Lynchburg College, Lynchburg, Va. He is with the U. S. Army Ac counting office, Paris, France. Ernest McCartha Died Suddenly Ernest McCartha, 77, died sud denly Saturday afternoon at his home, Route 1, Little Mountain. Mr. McCartha was born and reared in Lexington county, a son of the late William L. and Jane Cumalander McCartha. He had spent most of his life near Little Mountain where he was a farmer. He was a member of Bethel Lu theran church at White Rock. His wife, the former Viola Amick Mc Cartha, died in 1954. He is survived by one son, Har old A., of Cayce; one daughter, Mrs. J. D. Koon, of Little Moun tain; one sister, Mrs. John Lindler of Irmo; two brothers, John H. and W. Arthur, both of Chapin. Funeral services were conducted Saturday at Bethel Lutheran at White Rock by Rev. Guy C. Cruse and Rev. John D. Zeigler. Burial was in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers were Claude, J. B., Marvin McCartha, Fred Lindler, and Robert Lee Ballen- tine. Honorary escort consisted of the members of Bethel church. Saludan Dies; Relatives Here John Maliciah Berry, 81, of Rt. 4, Saluda, died at a Greenwood hospital Sunday after several years of declining health. A son of the late Claborn and Lylie Ann McCarty Berry, he was a life-long resident of Saluda county and a retired farmer. Among his survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Emmie Shealy^and a son, Homer Berry, both of New berry. Funeral services were conducted Monday at Butler Methodist church. Burial was in the church cemetery. His subject will ' be “Life in America Today.” I The Rally involves some 44 high J schools in South Carolina and over 200 high School members of stu dent councils. Niece Of Ezells Died Suddenly Miss Peggie Jo Johnson, of Roebuck, 26, passed away sud denly on February 13 at Spartan burg General hospital after a brief illness. She was a niece of Mrs. Paul B. Ezell of Newberry. Survivors also include her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe H. John son; a brother, Donald; a niece, and other relatives. Funeral services were conducted February 15 in Beaver Hill Bap tist church and interment followed in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens of Spartanburg. DRAYTON RUTHERFORD TO MEET TUESDAY Drayton Rutherford Chapter of the UDC will meet Tuesday, March 3 at 10:30 a.m. at the home of Mrs. Elmer Shealy with Mrs. A. J. Briggs and Mrs. T. B. Lester associate hostesses. Mrs. Walter Summer will lead the historical period with the life of Wade Hampton as her subject. C. C. Society Met Recently The meeting of the Crippled Children’s Society was held at the home of Mrs. Emmett Nichols on Wednesday, February 5. Mrs. William N. Henderson, the president, presided. J. D. French, treasurer, gave the financial report covering the period from September to Janu ary. Mrs. R. L. Baker gave a list of the equipment on hand which is kept at the Richard L. Baker’s Furniture store. Mrs. W. H. Tedford read letters of thanks from the Special Educa tion classes for gifts from the so ciety. Mrs. Henderson presented Phil lip Kelly, 1964 Easter Seal Cam paign chairman. Mr. Kelly effi ciently outlined the plans for the 1964 campaign. He expressed his appreciation to the various mem bers for their assistance in the past years and was quite enthu siastic over this year’s drive. Newberry’s goal has been set at $4,300. It was pointed out that the Newberry Society is recognized in the state for its outstanding work. Elizabeth Tribble and baby girl, Newberry. Boundary PTA Hears Epting The regular monthly meeting of the Boundary Street PTA was held in the school cafetorium on Thursday evening, February 13. Dr. James Cummings, president, presided. The meeting was opened with the ringing of the “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” accompanied by Mrs. P. N. Abrams. Rev. M. B. Fryga gave the de votional, using as his scripture, I Corinthians, 13th chapter. Mrs. Kenneth A. Hewitt asked for volunteers from the PTA to assist in the sale of Easter Lilies. The day set aside for this sale will be Saturday before Easter. Dr. Cummings asked for assist ance from parents on the visual Screening program. Dr. Cummings also requested that parents contact the State Representatives about making the State Superintendent of Educa tion an appointive office. Mrs. Sydney Carter, program chairman, presented Prof. T. E. Epting, Founder’s Day speaker. Mrs. Carter stated that Prof. Ep ting was a graduate of the city schools, Newberry college, and did further study in France. Prof. Epting is now a professor at New berry college, having served in this capacity for a number of j years and is one of Newberry’s be loved citizens. Prof. Epting gave very interest ing facts concerning education and paid special tribute to the found ers of the National Congress of PTA which was organized Febru ary 17, 1897 in Washington, D. C.
