Through the years, numerous ways of decorating and lighting the in door Christmas tree have been tried as well as a variety of colors and materials for trees. Aluminum trees, that may be used year after year, have been around for several years. Yet, the traditional natural evergreen con tinues to be the favorite. Even in these modern times, fa vorite decorations are those so popular in “the old days’’—multi colored lights, colored ornaments, icicles, drapes of tinsel and scenes under the tree. Use Colored Bulbs To Dramatize Outdoors White or colored spot and flool type light bulbs can be used to ad vantage to dramatize, accent, or highlight your Christmas tree, in doors or outdoors. For an intriguing effect, use a 75 or 150-watt clear flood behind a revolving color wheel to project changing tinted light patterns on the tree, doorway, window or house. -Revolving color wheels, to ac commodate flood bulbs, are made for indoor use and for outdoor use. Those designed for outdoor use come with a spike to put in the ground and are about 30 in ches high to keep the color wheel out of the snow. -AM Many Communist countries, after unsuccessful efforts to re name “Father Christmas” the Russian Santa, “Father Winter” have greatly relaxed efforts to prevent the celebration of Christmas as a Christian holi day. Father Christmas is as popu lar as ever, as is also the legend ary female gift giver, Babuska, which means grandmother. Ac cording to tradition, Babuska purposefully gave wrong direc tions to the Magi when they requested directions to Bethle hem. Babuska repented arm, in atonement for her bad deed, has since wandered about the world on Christmas Eve, look ing for the Christ Child and distributing gifts to all the chil dren she meets on the way. 2100 NANCE STREET NEWBERRY, SOUTH CAROLINA Use Right Bulbs To Illuminate Outdoors For outdoor floodlights to illu minate Christmas displays, your best bet is to stick to the 150-watt PAR-38 bulbs. TSiese are the weatherproof reflector type, like the kind used to light doorways. You can get 300- and 500-watt reflector bulbs for outdoor use, but those are likely to explode in a cold rain or snow unless pro tected by expensive fixtures. So just use two or more of the PAR-38’s when you wish more light. Indoors, you can use the 150-watt R-40 or 75-watt R-30 re flector spots and floods. TWELFTH NIGHT Twelfth Night, or Epiphany, is celebrated in various ways around the world. To Christians, Epiphany com memorates the manifestation of Jesus as Christ the Savior. Lit erally translated, Epiphany means “appearance.” In many parts of the world, Epiphany is associated with the “Three Kings.” The visit of the Three Kings to Bethlehem; the baptism of Jesus; and His first miracle at Cana are all three believed to have happened on the same date, although in dif ferent years. Epiphany Marks Visit Of Wise Men Traditionally, Twelfth Night of Christmas, or Epiphany, marks the visit of the Three Wise Men to the Christ Child in Bethlehem. Twelfth Night observances are still popular in Europe and in many sections of this country. In the old tradition, the Yule Log, burning since Christmas, is ex tinguished on this day. In this country, some communities gather their Christmas trees for a public bonfire, with everyone gathering around to sing Christmas carols. ROMANTIC CUSTOM In Greece, the burning log joins with romance in a colorful holiday custom. Two olive leaves —one for HE and one for SHE— are tossed to the hot coals. If the leaves curl toward each other, the pair is destined to live hap pily and long. If they bend away from each other, they may expect difficulties. If they burn to a crisp, it means the lovers’ love is all consuming and that, they say is best of all.
