The gypsies used ash for their campfires and were told by their elders that the ash was black balled from the evergreen list because it had no part in the hid ing of the Christ child. FRIENDS ... Talking dolls, like the ones seen on TV, will rank high in popularity this season. Newest talking dolls have soft cuddly bodies with hi-impact, “tuff to-break” plas tic heads. Candlemaking Among Oldest Professions Candlemaking is one of the world’s oldest professions. Anton Will, a German immigrant, was one of the first candlemakers in the United States. He made can dles over a kitchen stove in Syra cuse, New York, about 1855, founded a firm which now makes candles for the Vatican. Another American firm once fashioned candles in the likeness of Lillian Russell and also made the world’s biggest wax lights, an 18-foot memorial candle lighted once a year at singer Enrico Caru so’s tomb in Italy. Right Start Makes Tree Decoration Easy The right approach makes dec orating the family Christmas tree fun instead of confusion. Straighten out your lights along the floor and remove tdl kinks be fore you start to trim the tree. Make certain all bulbs are burn ing, replace the ones which are not. Then disconnect the strings and arrange colored bulbs alter nately. String lights around tree, start ing at the top, placing lights on inside bows first. When strings are in position, disconnect them before banging ornaments. HOLIDAY FIREWORKS In the United States, fireworks are associated with the celebra tion of the Fourth of July. Our neighbors to the South use fire works to celebrate the birthday of Christ. In some sections of the Amer icas, particularly on Christmas Eve, fireworks are as traditional as going to church or setting down to a family feast KINGLY GIFTS The gold, frankincense and myrrh presented to the Christ Child by the Three Kings were more than mere signs of wealth. Each had a special meaning. The gold was a sign they accepted Him as their king; frankincense was given as a symbol of his deity; and myrrh as a prophecy of His death. SAFE HOLIDAY Christmas is a time to remem ber the happy things. Yet it is sometimes a time of tragedy. More holiday accidents take place during the last 6 hours before Christmas Eve than dur ing the remainder of the holi day. The hourly rate for fatal accidents is 5 times greater dur ing this 6-hour period than dar ing the rest of the holiday season. These accidents happen on the highways and in the homes. If you are driving, don’t get in too big a hurry. If you are at home, be sure your tree is a safe one, that your wiring is ade quate. Turn off the Christmas tree lights If you leave the house. HELPING HANDS . . . Chil dren are eager to help with the holiday decorations and the favorite job of all is helping make the Christmas tree bright and colorful. HURRY, HURRY . . . Some times kiddies just can’t wait for the fire to die down. Can’t ex pect Santa to arrive till then, can yon? When the fire’s only a flickering light, one can bet Santa is near somewhere in the night. s ♦ V. si Wii im is" mm; ? & iisu a W i mm <<> & : '"lit r* m w £ i m ...
