CHRISTMAS SEALS
Christmas seals, the seasonal
reminder of the fight to stamp out
tuberculosis, have been with us
since 1904.
The idea was conceived by a
Danish postal clerk in 1903, whil»‘
mailing Christmas packages and
letters. Einar Holboell mentioned
the idea to his fellow workers and
they thought it would be a great
help in defraying the cost of fight
ing tuberculosis. The idea reached
King Christian, who approved,
and the image of Queen Louise
appeared on the first seals in
14104.
A Danish-born American, Jacob
Riis sold the idea to the Amer
ican public in a 1907 magazine
article and a Red Cross worker,
Miss Emily Bissell, started the
first American sales that year.
Two words found opposite the
word “dad” on many Christmas
gift lists are “shirt” and “tie”
Despite all the jokes about
dads getting nothing but ties in
their gift boxes, researchers say
the chances of a man getting a
tie as a gift are about one in
seven. The popularity of the tie
as a gift is understandable.
There's no worry about “size”
The tie will always fit. The only
worry is in getting a suitable
color. This is usually solved
simply by looking at the kind of
tie dad is wearing or the selec
tion on his tie rack.
Buying a man a shirt is a bit
more difficult. Size is important.
Yet, equally so, is color and
style.
Men's shirts may all look
alike, but there's always the
considerations of quality. The
woman who buys her blouses
with care should be able to buy
a man a quality shirt.
Some things to look for in
a quality shirt: sturdy button
holes—neat and without ravels;
smooth, uniform buttons;
sleeves cut in one piece so they
will be easier to iron; even,
closely spaced stitches along
cuffs and front panel.
Dad knows quality in shirts
and he will appreciate the kind
he would choose for himself.
Toys are designed to please
the hearts of children, and they
do. But all toys are not always
completely safe for children of
all ages.
If you have youngsters of
varying ages in the home, toys
selected for an older child may
be the source of an accident or
illness in the hands of a toddler.
When you shop for toys this
year, avoid toys made of lead or j
colored with lead-based paints.
Small children sometimes chew
off the lead paint and swallow it,
and serious illness could result.
Be careful, too, about small
toys that can be swallowed,
ilammable toys and toys with
rough or sharp edges.
Electric toys are for older
children—and be sure that these
bear the UL (Underwriters Lab
oratory) label on the cord and
Ihe toy itself.
Missile-throwing toys, partic
ularly air rifles and sling shots,
are dangerous, particularly to
the eyes. Toy archery sets can
also cause injury. If your child
receives a missile-throwing toy
for Christmas, for his own
safety, and for the welfare of
other children, set down rules
for safe use and be sure they are
enforced.

Happy Holidays
For hundreds of Americans, it
was not a Merry Christmas. For
almost as many more, it will not
be a happy New Year. Hundreds
of families are plunged into grief
by year-end holiday traffic acci
dents.
Don’t let it happen to you.
Never drive when overtired. Keep
a window open when the auto
mobile is in motion. Car heaters
keep you warm, but they can also
make you dangerously drowsy un
less counteracted by fresh air.
Fight “festivity fatigue” with
coffee. Take frequent coffee
breaks on long motor trips.
Talk with others in the car. If
alone, turn on the radio. Monot
ony can be a killer. Alcohol and
gasoline make a lethal mixture.
Male Shopper
Is E&’taieri,
frailer Says
It will be a bolder, yet more
realistic type of male shopper
who will haunt lingerie depart
ments and perfume counters this
Christmas season, according to
an Allentown, Pa. retailer who
conci icted his own survey.
Th e survey shows that the aver
age man will be looking for dainty
and intimate items—without
blushing when the salesgirl asks
what size. Man’s greater interest
and knowledge of women’s fash
ions account for part of this
change in habits, Hess says.
Realistic
Another survey revelation
shows that men will be shopping
more realistically. Besides the
romantic “must” items men buy
for their lady folk, such as French
perfume, lacy lingerie and up
holstered jewel and candy boxes,
this year they will buy more
“bread and butter” items such
as practical ready-to-wear ap
parel, household appliances, cook
ing utensils, home furnishings and
garden supplies.
The survey found that the men
folk will know exactly what they
want, what the wife needs around
the house or for herself and ex
actly what she has been wanting
for a long time—but there will be
some surprises. „

Some of the surprises will be
cocktail dresses which the male
shopper will buy for his lady and
the man will know the size dress
she wears and the color she pre
fers. When it comes to perfume,
the male shopper will demand
recognized scents and the favorite
ones of their ladies, not just any
perfume the saleslady suggests.

Some believe the ancient
Druids gave mystical signifi
cance to the mistletoe because
it grows high among the
branches of oak trees, touching
neither heaven nor earth. It was
believed to be immune, there
fore, to the malignant influence
of evil spirits.

Beauty Of Plants
You don’t really have to have
a green thumb to have “luck” with
house plants. You just need to re
member that such plants need suf
ficient light and sufficient humid
ity.
If your plants are thin and don’t
flower properly, they need more
light. If plants drop leaves or turn
brown, they lack sufficient humid
ity.
Give your plants the light they
need — utilizing incandescent or
fluorescent lights if necessary. But,
by all means keep plants away

Young Hearts
You can bring happiness this
Christmas to children in hospitals,
orphanages and in the families
of the unemployed by refurbishing
the toys your own children have
outgrown or no longer enjoy. In
many communities, civic and fra
ternal groups have organized pro
grams for this purpose.
The easiest way to make old
toys in basically good condition
'ook like new again is with color
ful quality enamels, and here are
some tips to help you do the job.
First and most important of all
be sure you use only suitable
anamels, particularly those that
contain less than 1 per cent of
lead.* While most enamels meant
"or interior use contain no harm
ful ingredients, be sure to tell
your paint dealer that you will
be painting toys. He will sell you
the right product. Under no cir
cumstances use outside paint on
toys or children’s furniture.
Kids Like Color
Bear in mind that children pre
fer strong, bold colors, the pri
maries; red, yellow and blue, the
bright secondaries; orange, green,
purple. It takes a more sophisti
cated taste to enjoy pastel and less
lively darker shades. They also
like the shininess of gloss enamel.
Wash the toy with detergent to
remove finger marks and other
soil. If old finish is glossy, it
should be dulled with sandpaper,
so new finish will adhere better.
Any cracks or holes should be
filled with water putty or plastic
wood which should be permitted
to dry before sanding smooth.
Easy To Use
For small articles, you’ll find
self-spraying enamels in aerosol
cans easiest and most practical
to use. If more than one color is
to be applied, protect the already
painted areas with masking tape.
