WINTER IN PARIS ... Everyone knows, because of the song,
that Paris is beautiful in April. Bat the historic French city is
also quite beautiful in winter as shown above in photo taken after
season’s first snowfall blanketed tree-lined walks.

Generally, the problem is that we tend to overlook the "every
day things" which fit nicely into the pattern of giftgiving.
Mom, for instance, will appreciate something for the kitchen
or the home, particularly something which in some way tnakes
her daily chores easier or which brightens the appearance of her
workshop. How about an electric fry pan? A ceramic clock?
A coffee maker? The list is endless and the price of kitchen
items will range from a few cents to several dollars. There’s
something in this range to suit every need and pocketbook.
Dad? He shouldn’t be too much trouble. What are his hob
bies? If he isn’t retired, how about something for his shop or
his office? A hand warmer is appreciated if be spends any time
outdoors. If he’s an inside man, how about an intercom system?
He’ll have fun rigging it up between office and shop, kitchen
or workshop. Clothes brush, sun glasses—these are also good
selections. And, despite all the old jokes, your dad might really
need and appreciate a new tie.
Grandparents? Many folks who have the time enjoy reading.
A subscription to a good magazine is a fine gift for a "reader"

only famous location that becomes crowded with merrymakers wait
ing to welcome the New Year. The photo above shows crowd gathered
it State and Randolph Streets in Chicago. Despite often near-zero
veather, Chicago’s Loop is crowded with people who came downtown
o welcome a New Year.
Christmas Story Borrows
Legends From Ancients
In establishing the date
by which Christmas is cele
brated commemorating the
birth of Christ, it is inter
esting to note that Christ
endom did not begin its cal
endar computations until
almost 550 years after the
birth of Christ.
Much of the Christinas
story is still unknown and
untold; but legend and
story has traced its history
since the beginning when
Christ preached ambng the
people, “Love thy neighbor
as thyself.* 9
Christ was thirty years
of age when the people of
IBs time recognized Him
as the Messiah of God. In
face of the shepherds and
Three Wise Men, it wasn't
until the Holy Spirit de
scended upon Him at the
baptism in the Jordan that
His teachings were accept
ed by the Christian world.
Strangely enough, many
influences have had their
effect on the festival of
Christmas as it is practiced
today, and none of them
“Christian” in the true
sense of the word. Yet, with
them lies the true, roman
tic, rich beginnings of the
Christmas Story.
History tells us that from
every epoch of history,
from the old, old Babylonian
Festivals, to the Druid Mys
teries, from the Roman Sat
urnalia, to Egyptian
Midwinter Festival of Foods
and finally to Christ Him
self, has come segments of
the whole of the Christmas
Story.
But there is more to the
Christmas Story. Much of
what the Christian world in
this twentieth century ob
serves, stems from a time
long years and even cen
turies before Christ.
