PHONE 276-5410 Mrs Cromer Service Friday Mrs. Nellie Timmerman Cromer, 59, wife of Thomas L. Cromer Sr., 2026 Shelly St., died suddenly at her home Wednesday night. She had been in declining health for several years. Mrs. Cromer was born and reared at Enoree in Laurens coun ty, a daughter of the late Stacey and Sally Cathcart Timmerman. She had spent most of her life In Newberry county, where she was a member of the Associate Re formed Presbyterian church. She is survived by her husband, Thomas L. Cromer, Sr., two sons, Thomas, Jr., of Summerville and Edward Lewis of Newberry; three sisters, Mrs. Carl Hudgens of Un ion, Mrs. William Langford, of Columbia, and Mrs. Mabel Orr of Holly Hill, Florida; one brother, Raymond Timmerman of Gastonia, N. C.; three grandchildren, Claire, Lynn and Luann Cromer. Funeral services were conduct ed Friday at the MeSwain Funeral Home by Dr. Paul L. Grier. In terment was in Newberry Memor ial Gardens. He was born in Newberry and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Du ane D. Darby. He was a veteran of World War II and was a re tired salesman. Survivors include his pa*- .its; two brothers, Ray of Newberry and Everette Da by of Camden; and one sister, Mrs. Dresser (Octavia) ^Kenny of Newberry. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday from MeSwain Fun eral Home by Rev. T. H. Vickery. Interment was in Rosemont Ceme tery. Active pallbearers were Olin Layton, George Heller, Johnson H. Clary, Bryant Stribble, Albert Jones, Roy Cochcroft, Johnny Swittenberg, and John Ruff. Honorary pallbearers were John ny Jones, Wilson Brown, Eugene S. Blease, Hugh Shannon, Tom Fellers, J. F. Clarkson, O. M. Cobb, James M. King, George Stone, Dr. E. J. Dickert, Tom Pope, Dr. Richard Lominick, Jack Chap pell, C. J. Swindler, Henry Simms, and Ernest Layton. Teachers At Conference Mrs. Philip Kelly and Mrs. Kib- ler Williamson, teachers at New berry High school, attended a 3- day conference in Louisville, Ky. on ways to improve their proffes- sion activities and classroom pro cedures. Margaret Evelyn Kelly of New berry, was the recipient of the P. E. Monroe Scholarship awarded each year to that young woman, who, in the judgment of the Fac ulty ranks highest in scholarship and citizenship in her Freshman year at-college. Miss Kelly is an honor graduate of the Newberry high school. The Kendall company Founda tion Scholarship was awarded to Virginia Roberta Cooper of New berry, and the Newberry Kiwanis Club Scholarship to Nancy Deree Abrams, Newberry. Newbery College Kendall Foun dation Scholarships were awarded to Brenda Kay Campbell, Whit mire; Charlsie Henriette Counts, Pomaria; James Henry Counts, Prosperity; Kathy Earle Dawkins, Prosperity; Roland Lewis Haw kins, Newberry; Jerry Wayne Koon, Pomaria; Deraid Bryan Long, Newberry; Gerald Virgil Long, Newberry; Kenneth Earl Long, Newberry. Magistrate Has Busy Month Magistrate Ben Dawkins hand led 159 law violations during the month of October and collected ! $2201.69 in fines. Eighty of the cases were charges of driving too fast for conditions. Thirty-one oth er violations accounted for the re maining 79 cashes. Among Phi Kappa Sigma’s pledges are Ste phen Counts of Prosperity and Joseph Tiilotson of Newberry. Wofford Rites Held Sunday Mrs. Emma Cothran Wofford, 74, died Friday night at the Bailey Memorial Hospital in Clinton after several months of declining health. She was a native of Anderson County, but had made her home in Joanna for the past 35 years. She was a daughter of the late Adam Quincy Cothran and Melvinia Dorr Cothran and she was employed by the Joanna Cotton Mills until her retirement several years ago. Survivors include her husband, Charles P. Wofford of near Joan na; two daughters, Mrs. Herbert Owens o. ? Clinton and Mrs. Grady Spires of Jacksonville, Fla.; and one sister, Mrs. Early Mundy of Newberry. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Epworth Methodisi Church at Joanna con ducted by Rev. J. Herbert Thomas and Rev. Ben Jones. Burial was in Rosemont Cemetery in Clinton. Pallbearers were Ralph Prather, Mack Prater, Rudy Prater, Guy Prater, James Fulmer and Darr Sineatfo.
