REV. ROBERT H. HARPER
THt VANQUISHtD
I N the Delgado Museum of Art
in City Park, New Orleans,
there is a figure in bronze of a
fallen gladiator. The shield has
slipped from his arm, the sword
has fallen from his nerveless fin
gers. Above him stands the strong,
alert figure of his antagonist, who
we imagine looks to the emperor
in his box of state who, with his
minions and his dames, views the
games, to learn what the signal
will be, whether life or death for
the fallen gladiator.
Who bears a heart could with
hold the sign of life for the man
who did his best but fell in the
fray? But how many deny sym
pathy to the vanquished!
JUST A THOUGHT:
When he wins or he loses, a
man can cling to his pride—if
he can look himself in the eye
and know that he really tried.
When afar beneath stars a
brave is sleeping only Red Wing
may be weeping her heart away
The fiery lava covered the Roman
sentinel who stood at his post of
duty at the gate of Pompeii, with
none to pity, and none to know of
him until long years had passed
And not so many days ago, a
multitude of people could go wild
with enthusiasm over a team that
won, perhaps by a margin of only
one point, or was saved from de
feat by a few seconds on the
clock, while scant praise was
given to other men who battled
hard. But whatever it is, the good
God says “well done” to the man
who develops the talent that is
given him.
