COUNTS A meeting of the central dist rict of the South Carolina Fed eration of Business and Profes sional Women’s Clubs, featuring H workshop by state officers, drew some 60 women here last week. The meeting was the last of four meetings held in the organ ization’s four state districts. Miss Jean Berry of Columbia, president of the state B&PW Clubs; Mrs. Mary F. Bigby of Greenville, second vice president; Mrs. Bertha Fortune of Easley, first vice president; and Mrs. Gladys White of Anderson, treas urer, all had parts in the work shop. Mrs. Bigby discussed a new committee structure which has been revised and combined into personal development, civic parti cipation and world affairs head ings. One of the obligations of the *B&PW organization in the com munity is to make sure capable women are participating in its economic, social and cultural life. Mrs. Bigby said. Mrs. Virgie Hite of Columbia urged local clubs to participate in courses in practical politics. The women present also accept ed an invitation from the Sumter club for the 1963 Central district meeting to be held there. Other persons on the program in Newberry College’s Kaufmann Hall were Mrs. Elmer Epting, president of the host Newberry Club; Mrs. Marie Wheeler of Sumter, central district director; Mrs. Myrtis Osteen of Sumter; Dr. A. G. D. Wiles, president of Newberry College, and Miss Doro thy Goldson of Eau Claire. County Roads To Be Paved About 144 miles of state secon dary system roads in Newberry and Richland counties will be pav ed under a contract awarded W. M. Reagan and Sons, Columbia, according to Chief Highway Com missioner Silas N. Pearman. The firm submitted a low bid of $162,584 to improve roads 400, 237, 408, 410, 244, 407, 296, 1151 and 1152, or portions. Hospital Births RICHARDSON M.r and Mrs. Thomas Edward Richardson of Route 2 announce the birth of a six pound, 14 ounce daughter, Cynthia Ann, on June 20 at Newberry Hospital. Mrs. Richardson is the former Polly Louise Wicker. Mrs. Wise is the former, Patsy Roberta Ear- gle. _ BERLIN (AHTNC) — Army Specialist Four Robert M. Sum mer, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Har rison T. Summer, 902 Caldwell St., recently participated in a three- day field training exercise in West Berlin’s famed Grunewald Forest with other personnel from the Ber lin -Brigade. The exercise, which involved the entire brigade, was designed to test unit reactions to attack and defense situations under simu lated combat conditions. Specialist Summer, an opera tions clerk in Headquarters Com pany of the 6th Infantry’s 3d Bat tle Group, entered the Army in January 1960 and was stationed at Fort Riley, Kan., before arriv ing overseas in June 1960. He is a 1959 graduate of New berry High School and attended the University of South Caro lina.
