Any One-Room
Schools Handy?
Wanted: A one-room school
house.
It is not likely that it will be
in prime condition but that really
doesn’t matter. In fact, if it is
made of logs, that is all right too.
The South Carolina State Fair
Association is looking for a one-
room school house. It wants to
move it to the Fairgrounds in Col
umbia to serve as headquarters
for Senior Citizens when they
come to the fair in October.
“We know that our older citiz
ens, many of whom went to school
in a one-room building, will have
a touch of nostalgia if we put them
in the atmosphere of their youth,*
says F. B. Ruff, secretary-mana
ger of the Fair.
He said that he was enlisting
the help of E. R. Crow, director
of the State Educational Finance
Commission, whose school con
struction program has about wip
ed out all the antiquated school
buildings in South Carolina, in lo
cating a suitable building.
Ruff said that the school build
ing also would serve to inform the
younger generation of conditions
existing when their parents and
grandparents went to school.
“We will want some old desks,
blackboards and chairs, Ruff said.
“And I don’t think •we will have
any trouble finding a couple of
hickory sticks.”

The Man’s Shop
JUST A THOUGHT:
Many today find it hard to
realize there are places in the
world where there is a penalty
for belief in God. For a few
in this “modern” world, Sun
day in church is just as much
a social affair as a Saturday
afternoon barbecue.

Cattle Rustlers. . .
if they will only ask for it. It is
not n right the hunter has to hunt
on land that is not his. High pow
ered rifles kill many cattle and
calves, so do shot guns. There are
few places in Newberry County
these types of firearms can be
used safely.
Cattle are crippled and eyes put
out as a result of the unthinking
sportsman. Doves love to feed in
the pastures and fields, the dairy
men’s cattle also graze these
places; the hunter and this com
bination just don’t mix. The farm
er can aid the hunter many times
by telling him the location of his
boundary, the location of his cat
tle and fields he does not want
the sportsman and his dog on.
Also he may be able to help in lo
cating game.
The farmers loves animals. To
many here in Newberry County
they are his source of livelihood.
They are cne of the most humane
group. People do not realize when
they put out dogs they do not
want, these dogs band together for
survival. These dog packs kill
pigs, Turkeys, calves and cattle.
They chase livestock to the point
of exhaustion then make the kill.
So don’t get upset when the far
mer kills your dog if it is tres
passing on his land, it is only for
his protection and family he is
thinking of.
The findings of the meeting
were each farmer should report at
once any losses of cattle, swine,
or poultry mentioned above to
the sheriff’s office. If possible
mark your livestock for identifi
cation. Also a committee compos
ed of Dad Amis, Jack Hughes, M.
O. Mayer, Dick Neel, and C. T.
Smith w T as appointed to study and
keep up with conditions in the
county and make any recommen
dations necessary.
heartfelt thanks...
to the citizens of South Carolina for
the confidence you’ve shown in me
by your tremendous vote.
I’ll do my utmost to live up to your
expectations.
