istry and Acting Head of the De
partment of Natural Sciences, is
resigning as a member of the fac
ulty of Newberry College, effec
tive at the close of the 1961-1962
session. This will culminate a long
and noteworthy teaching career
which began in 1923 at Newberry
College, his alma mater.
Two generations of students
have learned to love and to res
pect Professor Park. As a teacher
of chemistry and physics, he has
been instrumental in directing the
efforts of numerous graduates to
advanced study in the sciences. A
list of former students include
Ph.D’s and M.A.’s in chemistry
and in physics, physicians, dentists,
pharmacists, teachers of science,
plant superintendents, research
chemists ttiid many others who are
actively engaged in science, as
well as a host of former students
in other fields of activity. The
dedicatory page of the 1940 New-
berrian states, “His efficient in
struction, his exacting fairness,
his winning personality, and his
other marks of quality have en
deared him to all whom he has
taught and associated with.”
Professor Park was born near
Salisbury, N. C. He graduated
from Mount Pleasant Collegiate
Institute, Mount Pleasant, N. C.,
and enrolled at Newberry College,
graduating in June 1923. In Sep
tember, 1923, he became an in
structor in the Department of
Natural Sciences at Newberry Col
lege. A few years later, he was
given a leave of absence to do
graduate study in chemistry and
physics at the University of North
Carolina. Soon after Professor
Park’s return to Newberry College
he became acting Head of the De
partment of Natural Sciences. His
teaching has been principally in
the field of chemistry.
Professor Park has served un
der four Newberry College Presi
dents, Dr. S. J. Derrick, Dr. Jas.
C. Kinard, Dr. C. A. Kaufmann,
and Dr. A. G. D. Wiles. When he
became associated with the college,
there were ten members of the

The way to achieve growth is to grow. We are a lit
tle weary with these people within the economic system
who constantly blame the other fellow for sluggishness
or flatness in economic activity. Why should not each
of us ask himself, “What am I doing about it?” The
answer is: “We can all do better what we are already
doing. We can do more. We can step up our own activi
ty. We can ask ourselves, “How can I do this better?”
