Placing: second was Miss Carol Armfield, and third place winner was Morgan Williams of Mid-Carolina High. CAROLINA REMNANT SHOP Attention Voters! Next Tuesday you are being asked to decide whether an area on and adjacent to Main Street and Highway 76 should be annexed to the City of Newberry. We ask you to consider the following: It is estimated that the proposed annexation will cost the taxpayers IN EXCESS OF $300,000. It is estimated that tax millage would have to be INCREASED BY 8 MILLS to pay for services to this ar^a. There are no large businesses in this area from which the city would derive enough revenue to make the annexation practical. Much of the area is farmland on which there are no homes. We believe in progress, but we believe that raising taxes to annex this area at this time, when the City of Newberry already owes more than one million dollars in General Revenue Bonds, would be a deterrent, rath er than an incentive, to future progress. Black- well of Newberry announce the engagement of her daughter, Miss Mary Jo Griffith to Roger Keith Gibson, son of Mrs. R. D. Patter son and the late R. K. Gibson of Arlington, Va. Miss Griffith is [jthe daughter of the late Joe Griffith of Saluda. The bride-elect is a graduate of Newberry High School and the University of South Carolina, where she served as president of the Euphrosynean Literary So ciety and as treasurer and presi dent of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. The bridegroom-elect graduated from West Virginia University with a degree in Business Admini stration. He is a member of Sig ma Nu fraternity. Both are presently employed with the U. S. General Accounting Office in Washington, D. C. The wedding is to take place in May. Ward Selected To Coach Basketball Dr. A. G. D. Wiles, President of Newberry College, announces the appointment of Charles R. Ward, as Assistant Professor of Physical Education and Basket ball Coach as of September 1, 1962. Mr. Ward attended and played basketball at West Virginia Uni versity, Morgantown, West Vir ginia, and Marshall College, Hunt ington, West Virginia, from which he received his B.A. degree. He took his M.S. degree in Physical Education from Florida State Uni versity, Tallahassee, Florida. Mr. Ward has been coaching basketball in high schools for 13 years. His teams have won 271 games and lost 66. From 1949-54 he coached in high schools in Kentucky, some of his players becoming great stars in college basketball. At present he is head basketball coach and head of the Physical Education Department at Pompano Beach Senior High School, Pompano Beach, Florida, which has an en rollment of over 2,000 students. His teams have won many coun ty ,conference, and district tour naments; were runner-up twice in the last four years in the Florida basketball tournament. He has promoted, participated in, and won the top invitational basketball tournament in Florida. He has conducted his own bas ketball clinic for six years, and has lectured in a number of high school and college clinics. A close student of basketball, he has published a number of articles in national sports magazines, such as Scholastic Coach, Athletic Journal, and Sports Digest, and is now writing a book on the game. Mr. Ward is married and has two children. Performance On Sunday afternoon, April 8, at 3:30, the oratorio Elijah by Mendelssohn will be performed by the Newberry College Singers ami soloisU; under the direction of Dr. Milton Moore. The performance will be held in MacLean Gymna sium on the Newberry College Campus. Although Mendelssohn’s ora torio Elijah is not heard as fre quently as some others, it is rank ed by music critics as being one of the finest and most inspiring oratorios ever written. The Elijah was first perfodmed in London, England, and was conducted by the composer. It was such a success that ten additional performances had to be given to accommodate the crowds who wanted to hear this oratorio. The Newberry College Singers have been rehearsing on the Eli jah since their Christmas tour, and it is hoped that an overflow crowd will be on hand to hear this performance of the Elijah on the Newberry College campus. Soloists for the Elijah will be Herman Schwacke Jr., baritone, Jt/TZ Theatre W. C. Norris Dies At Age 90 William Calhoun Norris, 90, of Rt. 2, Newberry, died Friday night at the Newberry County Memor ial Hospital after a long illness. Mr. Norris was born and rear ed at Anderson, son of the late Dr. John T. Norris and Eliza beth Halfacre Norris. He spent most of his life in the Johnstone section where he op erated a farm. He was a member of Aveleigh Presbyterian Church. He was married three times; first to the late Mrs. Jane Long Nor ris, and second to ' Mrs. Annie Blanche Rish Norris, both deceas ed. His third marriage was to Mrs. Rhoda Della Rish Norris, who sur vives. He is also survived by five sons, George, William C. Jr., Claude,. Earl and Jackson Nor ris, all of Newberry; two daugh ters, Mrs. Zack Kinard of Po- maria and Mrs. Thureli Kinard of Hampton; one sister, Mrs. O. A. Sowers of Clinton; and four grand children. Funeral services were conduct ed at 2 p.m. Sunday at McSwain Funeral home by Rev. Dr. Neil E. Truesdell and Rev, John P. Grif fith. Burial was in Rosemont Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Marvin Wilson, J. C. Neel, Henry Living ston, Jesse Willard, J. B. Lindley, and Johnny Shealy. Are Discussed 1 ' , At a meeting Tuesday morning, the Newberry Merchants Associa tion passed a resolution to ask the City of Newberry to divert parking meter revenues to the es tablishment of additional parking lots in and near the business dist rict. The merchants also came to the conclusion that in the future, op ening and closing hours will be set by each line of business; drug stores will establish their hours, grocery stores theirs, etc. The Merchants Associatiofri will ; no longer recommend closing hours. It was decided at the meeting that there will be no closings dur ing the Easter period except for Sunday; that stores will close Wed nesday, July 4th; Monday, Sep tember 3rd, for Labor Day, and Thursday, November 22nd for Thanksgiving.
