Three Bands To
Give Concert
On Sunday
On Sunday afternoon, March 25
«t 4:00 p.m., there will be a com-
Irined band concert at Willow-
brook Park in Newberry.
The bands participating will be
the Newberry College Band, the
246th Army Band, SCARNG, and
the Newberry Concert Band,
sponsored by Newberry Mills, Inc.
The combined bands, numbering
ninety members, will be conducted
by Charles P. Pruitt, who is a
member of the Newberry College
Music Department, Commanding
Officer oif the 246th Army Band,
and Director of the Newberry Con
cert Band.
The concert is open to the pub
lic and if this program is support
ed by the public, Mr. Pruitt hopes
to extend this concert next year to
include all of the bands in New
berry County.
If the weather does not permit
the concert to be held outside, the
alternate place for the concert will
be in the Newberry High School
Auditorium at 4:00 p.m.
Guest conductors will include
Miss Lorraine Paris, Director of
the Newberry High School Band,
and Mr. Boyd Robertson, director
of the Newberry Concert Band be
fore his recent retirement.
Newberry has always been a
strong band city and has produced
through local talent and Newberry
College more band directors than
any othej* city in South Carolina.

Carolina graduates of Newberry
College now teaching band in the

Luther League
Spring Meeting
Newberry Conference Luther
League will hold its regular spring
meeting Sunday, March 25 at St.
Paul’s Lutheran Church near Po-
maria at 3:00 p.m. The program
will be centered around the theme
“The People of God.”, There will
be a panel to tell of the effects
that the upcoming merger will
have on the Luther League.
During the reports of the offi
cers, the divisional chairmen will
explain the theme of the meeting
as it is related to the five divisions
of the Luther League program.
There will also be a presentation
by the State Executive Commit
tee.
It is the sincere wish of the
Newberry Conference Executive
Committee that every league in
Newberry Conference be repre
sented at this meeting at St.
Paul’s on March 25.

Dies Suddenly
Mrs. Mary Emma Mcllwain
Halfacre, 68, died suddenly Sun
day morning at the home of her
sister, Mrs. J. H. Hodges m
Hodges.
She was born in Abbeville Coun
ty, a daughter of the late George
Eiken and Rebecca Stevenson Mc
llwain. She taught school for thir
teen years and was employed at
Carpenters until her retirement.
She was a member of St. Phillip’s
Lutheran Church.
Her husband, David Edwin Half
acre, died three weeks ago.
Surviving are one step-son, E.
H. Halfacre of Irmo and Lexing
ton; three step-daughters, Mrs.
Herman Shealy of Joanna, Mrs.
George Y. Taylor of Newberry
and Mrs. James Hayes of New
port News, Va.; four sisters, Mrs.
J. H. Hodges and Mrs. J. C. Dan
iels, both of Hodges, Mrs. W. C.
Baldwin of Clinton and Mrs. Her
man H. Halfacre of Newberry; 8
grandchildren and 4 great-grand
children.
Funeral services were conducted
at 3 p.m. Monday at the Whitaker
Funeral Home by Rev; Clarence
L. Richardson. Burial was in St.
Phillips Lutheran Church Ceme
tery.

Colony Church
During the week of March 25,
Roy Long, president of the youth
group Luther League in England
will visit Colony Church. He will
be the house guest of the Rev. and
Mrs. Hubert A. Dunlap.
The 19-year-old youth arrived
in the United States on January 8
to observe youth work on the con
gregational level. Since arriving
he has spent a month each in the
Pittsburgh and Ohio Lutheran Sy
nods. During his month’s r v 8y in
the South Carolina Synod xie will
have visited St. Paul’s Church, Co
lumbia, Redeemer Church, Char
leston, Colony Church, Newberry,
and St. John’s Church, Walhalla.
Arrangements for his stay in
this country were made through
the Youth Leader’s Exchange, a
part of the plans and program of
the Lutheran World Federation
Commission on Stewardship and
Congregational Life.
Miss Eleanor Sheets, Synodical
Director of Christian Education, is
in charge of arrangements while
he is in the South Carolina Synod.
During his stay in the Newber
ry area, Mr. Long will visit New
berry College and other points of
interest. He will atte*. 1 the New
berry Conference Luther League
Spring Meeting to be held in St.
Paul’s Church, Pomaria, Sunday
afternoon. He will be the guest
of Colony’s League, Sunday even

J. R. Epting
Rites Sunday
James Robert (Jim) Epting, 90,
died early Saturday morning at
his residence in the Bush River
section of Newberry County. He
had been seriously ill for the past
three days.
Mr. Epting was born and rear
ed in Lexington County, a son of
the late Jacob and Mary Ann
Counts Epting. He had spent most
of his life in the Bush River sec
tion, where he operated a farm
and was one of the oldest members
of St. James Lutheran Church. He
was a member of the Woodman of
the World. He was married to the
late Mrs. Corrie Ella Metts Ept
ing who died in 1946.
He is survived by five soue,
Maxcy and Carroll Epting, both
of Rt. 3, J. Lester Fpting of Laur
ens, Joe Epting of High Point, N.
C., and Virgil Epting of High
Point, N. C.; five daughters, Mrs.
Mai.uel Wicker, Mrs. Floyd Pitts,
ana Mrs. Helen Minick, all of
Newberry, Mrs. Roland Hutchin
son of High Point, N. C., and Mrs.
Wilson Merchant of Laurens; 27
grandchildren and 36 great-grand
children.
Funeral services were conducted
at 2 p.m. Sunday at Holy Trinity
Lutheran Church at Little Moun
tain by Rev. Garth L. Hill, Rev.
Francis I. Fesperman, and Rev.
Arden J. Stewart. Interment was
in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Harold
Hutchinson, Reeder Pitts, Roland
Epting, Stephen Epting, J. C. Ept
ing Jr., Mason Young.
Honorary escort was composed
of J. R. McLeod, Ernest Long,
