Action Council
January 28 has been designated
as a special time for sermons on
“Christian Observance of Sunday”
in churches throughout South Car
olina. This is recommended to the
churches by the inter-church
Christian action Council which ap
proved the idea at its recent An ■ 1
nual meeting in Columbia.
The idea for a special sermon
on this timely topic originated,
acording to Council Executive The
Rev. Howard G. McClain, in a
resolution to the Men’s Bible class
of the First Presbyterian church
in Charleston.
The resolution requested that
the Charleston Ministers’ Asso
ciation establish a time for ser
mons on this topic. The Charles
ton pastors’ group responded very
favorably to the suggestion and
designated January 28 as the
time. The Christian Action Coun
cil, at its annual meeting, then
considered the idea, thought it
worth recommending to all the
churches of the State.
The timeliness of these ser
mons, Mr. McClain indicated, is
found not only (1) in the present
efforts to pass a stronger Sunday
closing law in the state legislative
body, and (2) in the consideration
of the validity of such laws by the
federal courts.
But especially for the churches
he indicated, there is an (3) ur
gent and pressing need to under
stand and indoctrinate our mem
bers in the meaning and relev
ance for today of the 4th Com
mandment to remember the Lords
day and to keep it holy.
A special packet of information
for pastors has been prepared by
the Christian Action council and
is avai.able free on request by
writing to them at 1420 Lady St.,
Columbia.
Ke-elected officers of the state
wide interdenominational Council
were Dr. Neil Truesdell of New
berry, president; Mrs. D. C. Bo-
mar of Ridge Springs and Rev.
Bryan Crenshaw of Gaffney, vice
presidents, and Rev. Neal Wynd-
ham of Columbia, secretary.

State Highways
Circle Globe
Roads in the combined highway
system totaled 29,533 miles on
December 31, a year-end road in
ventory statement by S. C. High
way department revealed.
Cost of upkeep of state-main
tained roads amounted to $16,081,-
000 in 1961, a figure that grows
from year to year as mileage in
creases.
The summary showed that, laid
end to end, the 26,154 miles of
paving would more than circle
the earth. Of this paved mileage
9,268 miles are on the heavily
traveled primary system routes
and 16,887 miles are on the lesser
traveled state secondary system
road.*.. A total of 3,377 miles in the
system are unpaved.
The primary system is limited
by law to 10,000 miles, so year-by
year growth of highways cons
tructed and placed under Highway
department maintenance is large
ly in the secondary system. (In
cluded in the primary mileage are
Interstate System highways, of
which 205 miles art open to traf
fic, 93 miles under construction
and 335 miles to be built, a total
of 678 miles.)
Orangeburg has the largest
number of miles in the combined
system, 1152. Only four other
counties, Aiken, Anderson, Green
ville, and Spartanburg, have over
1000 miles in the system.
