Do we come again to the season of Christmas... or, does
the Christmas come to us?
Christmas comes to us, as always. All we need do is wait.
Pretty strings of lights appear along Main Street Store
windows seem to come alive with thousands of toys and
gifts and most desirable things. Up and down most any
street in town, merry, many-colored windows reflect the
spirit of warmth that is so much a part of the season.
Soon we begin to receive cards in the mail, from folks
around town, from relatives, and a few from once-dear
friends we lost somewhere in the past
Begrudgingly at first, then with mounting enthusiasm,
we undertake the obligations of meeting our own gift and
Christmas card list. We begin to feel an inner glow, a sense
of fellowship with the world—and by the time the holiday
arrives, we are really glad it’s Christmas!
Yes, Christmas comes to us, whether we like it or not
We cannot escape it.
But, do we really come to the spirit of Christmas when
Christmas comes to us ? Not if our celebration of Christmas
begins and ends with the program outlined above.
Pretty lights that twinkle and glow; pretty cards from
friends new and old; is this the purpose of Christmas?
Gift giving—trying to remember everyone who is likely
to remember ua; is this enough when Christmas comes?
Christmas brings to each of us the opportunity to share
in the most magnificent moment of all time—the birth of
Jesus Chi ist, the Redeemer, the Savior of all mankind.
Yes, Christmas comes once a year, with all the outward
trappin > we have come to know so well. Yet it is for
nothing—unless each individual heart comes again to be
filled with th true spirit of Christmas; the realization and
appreciation > ‘ the fact that on this day God sent his only
son to save the world.
IT’S LIKE THIS . . . Old Kris Kringle makes a point, with
extended finger, and young ears and eyes are keyed to every
word. You can bet, after hearing Santa’s words, these youngsters
will be on good behavior from now on—at least until Christmas.

Santa Claus is the special friend of the young, which makes it only
fitting that the town of Santa Claus, Indiana was named by children.
Today, thousands of children, from all parte of the world, write
to Santa Claus c/o Santa Claus, Ind., and each of them receives a
return letter from Santa Claus himself.
The stage was set for this happy situation more than one hundred
years ago. The citizens of this small Indiana town were gathered
to select a new name for their community. Originally, it was called
Santa Fe, but postal authorities suggested selection of another name
since there already was a Santa Fe in New Mexico.
Timely Arrival
Community leaders were considering a number of name* tor the
town when someone dressed as Santa Claus came in. Immediately,
the children in the audience shouted “Santa Claus I” ‘Santa Qausi”
The adults thought the name sounded fine, so the town of Santa
Claus was bom.
Business booms in the Santa Claus post office each year as Christ
mas approaches. Last year the post office handled well over 10,000
letters addressed to the old gentleman with the red suit and white
whiskers—and each child who enclosed a return address received a
personal reply from Santa Claus himself.
Many of the letters received are in foreign languages, but Post
master Elbert E. Reinke enlists the aid of monks at nearby St Mein-
rad Monastery and they translate. Answers to foreign letters, the
postmaster explains, are adapted to the different customs and ideas
that children of other lands may have about the holiday season.
Personal Reply
The American Legion at Santa Claus handles the letter writing
operation each Christmas, sending a personal reply to each child
who has included a return address.
Adults don’t write to Santa Claus, but many of them do have their
Gbrivtraas cards mailed from Santa Claus, Ind., so they will bear
Ae unusual postmark. In all, the busy Santa Claus post office handles
well o««s t 000,000 pieces of mail during the holiday season.
