PAGE EIGHT THE NEWBERRY SUN, NEWBERRY, SOUTH CAROLINA THURSDAY, NOVEMBER % 1961 Farm Bureau Crowns Queen Officers of the Newberry Coun ty Farm Bureau were announced at their recent annual meeting held in the Newberry High School auditorium. They are: H. Monroe Harmon Jr., president; R. C. Neel, HI, vice president and Mrs. Annie I. 40U Fanning, secretary-treasurer. The directors at large include, Hichard C. Neel Jr., T. B. Boozer, L. Edward Chandler and Wifbur L .Epting. T. B. Boozer has been named state director. Directors, William Ballentine, Earl Bedenbaugh, W. P. Beden- baugh, Cecil Bishop, Virgil Bo land, Mrs. Harold Bowers, James A- Blown, Harold Cook, Waldo Halfacre, John S. Harmon, Mrs. J. B. Kinard, John Kunkle, R. E. Neel, A. P. Pugh, Richard Henry Ruff, Robert Shealy and George Young. Among resolutions adopted was one favoring a schedule of class room teacher’s pay that is com petitive with that of adjoining states in order to retain talented and qualified teachers in the state of South Carolina. Another urged the county dele gation to co-author and support legislation in 1962 that Will provide electric cooperatives in South Car olina with legal means to protect their properties as is provided by laws of the state to other suppliers of electricity. The farm organiza tion opposed either a federal or atate minimum wage aw. They favored the policy that livestock on farms should not be subject to a property tax levy. The body requested that WIS- TV be permitted to remain on its present VHF Range so that it may continue to be of the best possible service to this viewing area. Following a luncheon und busi ness meeting a talent and queen contest was conducted. Miss Barbara Griffin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Griffin of Pomaria was chosen queen of the Newberry Farm Bureau. Mis.- Faye Counts, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Counts of Little Moun tain was first runner-up and Miss Bonnie Boland, daughter of Mr. | and Mrs. Virgil Boland, also* of Little Mountain was second run ner-up. Miss Griffin, a student in the Mid-Carolina High school was crowned by Miss Susanne Long. In the junior talent contest Wil lie Gilfillan placed first with a piaffo rendition of Boogie Woogie which he composed and Earl and Steve Griffin won second place. Emily Boozer won first place in the senior talent division with a pantomine, and Margaret Mason was second with an impersonation of radio star Minnie Pearl. The judges for the beauty and talent contest were Mrs. Kitte Belle McGregor of Columbia and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bell of Ward. Thursday Rites For Mrs. Cousins Mrs. Ila Cornelia Crmneri Cous ins, 85, widow of John Henry Cousins, died early ; Wednes4»y morning last week at the New berry Memorial Hospital a^ter a lingering illness. Mrs. Cousins was born in New berry County, ..the daughter of the late James Fielding and Dru- cilla Rutherford Cromer. She was a member of Colony . Lutheran Church. She is survived by seven sons, Olin L. Cousins, Ira T. Cousins and Frank N. Cousins, all of New berry; Jackson R. Cousins and Henry B. Cousins, both of Colum bia; James C. Cousins of Simp- sonville, and Walter M. Cousins of the U. S. Merchant Marines; tw r o daughters, Miss Narvice Cousins of Sumter and Mrs. Geo. B. Brehmer of Kinards; 22 grand children and 12 great-grandchil dren. P'uneral services were conducted Thursday at 3 p.m. from Whitaker Funeral Home by Rev. H. A. Dun lap, Rev. Henry A. McCullough Jr., and Rev. Francis Fesperman. Interment was in the Colony Luth eran Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Tom Cromer, Fred Cromer, Horace Cro mer, Gilder Cromer, Charlie Cro mer, Luther Cousins, George Cro mer and Cromer Foy. Sowing as honorary pallbear ers were Arthur Boozer, J. F. Hawkins, H. W. Schumpert, L. C. Fulmer, J. L. Long, Dr. James A. Underwood Jr., Thomas H. Pope, Ira Summer, Maxie Hamm and members of Colony Lutheran Church Council. Gallman Parade For Homecoming The Gallman High School Home coming Parade will be held Fri day at 1:45 p.m. There will be several bands, two floats, one Miss Homecoming and one Miss Gallman High; and decorated cars. The Homecoming game will be played on the Gallman High field Friday night with Schofield of Aik en as opponent. The Gallman High Tigers de feated Saunders High of Laurens last Friday night at Laurens 14- 12. This was the first time Saun ders High had been defeated on its home field in 15 years. Mrs. Chapman is the former Miss Martha Rebecca Cumalander. Mill Official Writes Senator The following letter was written by A. G. Heinsholn, Jr., of Spin- dale Mills, Inc., Spindale, N. C., to Senator Olin D. Johnston: “Dear Sir: “After several fruitless weeks of trying to get from you a simple answer to a simple question, I have no recourse now but to pub licly lay this story on the line. “You will recall that tb« Post Office Department and Pitne^- Bowes Company quickly retreated from their cowardly and stupid at tempt to recapture postage meter plates, reading: “ ‘This is a Republic, Not a Democracy.
