More Money
Available
From FHA
Additional funds have been
made available to help meet the
needs of eligible farmers who
need operating money to carry
out their farming operations, Ed
win P. Rogers, State Director for
the Farmers Home *- Administra
tion announced recently.
Mr. Rogers said $35,000,000 con
tingency fund provided by the
1961- Agricultural Appropriations
Act has just been released to the
Farmers Home Administration to
meet the growing demand for
credit.
This move was taken by the U.
S. department *0/ Agriculture, in
an effort to make certain, within
the authorities and funds avail
able,. that no qualified family-type
farmer will be required to give up
farming because of his inability
to finance his 1961 operations.
Williams H. Carter, Supervisor
for Newberry county, stated that
because of high operating costs
and unfavorable margins of pro
fits many farmers have exhaust
ed their regular sources of farm
operating credit. The amount of
operating loans made so far this
year by the Farmers Home Ad
ministration in South Carolina to
tals 17 per cent higher than last
year. Farmers receiving operating
loans have increased 1 per cent.
Most of the applications so far
this year are for loans to buy
cows ,equipmeftt, machinery. Some
applications have also been re
ceived for refinancing, water sup
ply, lot paving and barn improve
ments, milk tanks and automatic
feeders.
The Farm Home Administration
makes operating loans primarily
to help eligible farmers make im
proved use of their land and la
bor resources on family-type farms
and make needed changes in their
farming systems. Most of the
changes call for adopting better
farming practices and improving
the efficiency of their farming
operations. Loans may also be
made to qualified farmers who
carry on smaller than family-
size operations.
Operating loans help farmers
pay for equipment, livestock, feed,
seed, fertilizer, tractor fuel and
other farm and home operating
needs including the refinancing of
chattel debts. Loans are schedul
ed for repayment in accordance
with the borrower’s ability to re
pay, over period up to 7 years.
The interest rate is 5 per cent.
Further information on these
loans may be obtained from the
county office of the Farmers
Home Administration located in
the Agricultural building, New
berry.

AN EMPTY HOUSE
W E LIVE as spiritual beings
in a spiritual realm no less
real because it is unseen by mor
tal eyes. We dwell in a world that
is not less real because it is un
seen. It is a world in which the
spirits of good and the spirits oi
evil cross our pathway, seeking
to find a lodging place in our
hearts. This observation should
help us to understand the empty
JUST A x THOUGHT:
The progress of Christian
ity has been noteworthy, but
it still must be said that there
are today too many who only
have time for spiritual thoughts
or actions when dressed in
their Sunday best. Getting “re
ligion” on Sunday is much bet
ter than not getting it at all,
but who’s to say just how won
derful this world would be if
we all paid more attention to
spiritual things every day in
the week?

house of which we read in the
12th chapter^of Matthew.
When the unclean spirit had
gone out of man, he went through
dry places, seeking rest, and
found none, And he returned t'
the house which he had left and
he found it empty, swept and
garnished. Then he took untc
himself seven other spirits, mort
wicked than himself. And they
entered into the house and dwell
there, and the last state of thf
iwner was worse than the first.
Some years ago, I saw in tht
outskirts of New Orleans an old
brick house that had known better
days. Evidently no one dweh
there. That was the tragedy of an
empty house. But what it repre
sents is infinitely worse, an empty
life.
