Can Good Manners Hide Something?

is smart, however, will make it her
business to find out the truth.
In the matter of manners, we

am sixteen. I have been dating
this older boy and consider him
a very nice person. He is polite
and thoughtful. He never even
smokes unless he asks me If I
mind. Now, someone tells me he
is *no good’ and that he has a
police record. What should I
do?”
The mere fact that someone has
a police record does not make that
individual a “bad” person ... no
more than perfect manners are
complete assurance of a perfect
individual.
Many outstanding citizens have
“police records” — parking viola
tions, minor traffic offenses, etc.
And, some of the smoothest
"crooks” in the business have
the manners, attitude and ap
pearance of bank presidents and
business executives.
When someone says that an in
dividual has a police record,
they usually infer that this per
son is a habitual off aider, "al
ways in trouble with the police.”
If such is the case, anyone who
associates with this individual too
much or too often, is apt to ac
cidentally "get into trouble,” too
. . . perhaps by just being at the
wrong place at the wrong time.
But . . . simply stated, without
evidence and fact, the remark
that someone has a “police rec-

good manners alone are not con
crete evidence of the type of
person an individual happens to
be. It is certainly evidence of
exposure to proper training and
some indication that the individ
ual knows the difference between
"right” and "wrong”; “good”
and "bad”—4>ut it is the real
pe^on, the one underneath the
outward veneer that is impor
tant.
The older we get in this life,
the more we learn that it is very
easy to be "wrong” about peo
ple. We misjudge them. We mis
understand them and their inten
tions. We listen to others, instead
of trusting our own judgement.
Eventually we come to the con
clusion that the best thing to do
is to listen to others; to hear
what they have to say—and then
find the truth of the matter for
ourselves.

The year i860 marks the one-hundredth anniversary year in which
one, chosen by the colonies’ found
ers to signify the determination
uppermost in their minds. It
means "remain true”—and it was
that which they intended to do.
Tbr document is a century old
Constitution and By-Laws of the
Amana Society, signed by sB adult
male members of the settlement,
setting out precepts by which they
intended living together.
The origin of the Amana colonies
lies in Germany's Rhineland and
the Pietiest movement of the
1700s. The movement for simplic
ity in religion, was taken as an
. affront by established churches
and by the small states forming
the Gerfhan federation. Persecu
tion’forced the members ol the
movement into close bonds and
they acquired the habit of mutual
support which persists today in
the Amana colpnies in Iowa. /
Known then as "Inspiration-
ists,” four leaders of the move-
' moat came to the United States
ifi 184?, and signed a treaty with
the Seneca Indians, buying 5.00C
acres of the Seneca reservation
near Buffalo, N.Y. Three villages ,
were built on the New York State
part of the tract within a year and
two others on tile Canadian side
of the Niagara River. Membership
of the colonies reached 800 per
sons. But, as the colonies grew
so did Buffalo and the Ebenezer
Society (as the group was known
in tills country) moved west to find
cheap, fannable laud en which
to settle. r / i.
After searching through Kansas
and Nebraska, a land-hunting del
egation of society members found
the tract along the Iowa River,
about 20 miles west of Iowa City, ^
which the colonists now occupy.
The society purchased 18,000 acres
of the tract in 1884 and later ac
quired 7,000 more. Within 10
years, all the members moved to
Iowa from New York and the
group reincorporated under the
name of the Amana Society.
the name "Amana” first appeared in a published document in Iowa.
Today it is a name world-famous for quality and craftsmanship in
the manufacture of appliances. A century ago, the name had meaning
only to a small group of religious refugees from Europe, seekirg
through hard work and fearing God to carve out a home along the
Iowa River, \ .
The name Amana is a Biblical
