Checks Mailed
In County
A large number of county citi
zens wero made happier last week
when banks of the county mailed
Christmas Club checks. South
Carolina National bank announc
ed its mailing last week, but did
' not give the total of savings in
the county.
Joe Roberts, manager of the
Newberry County Bank, stated
that Christinas Club members in
Newberry and Joanna received
approximately a quarter of a mil
lion dollars in checks mailed out
last Friday night.

Autumn Leaves
May Be Hazard
To Motorists
Autumn leaves are pretty on
the trees, but they can be danger- 1
ous on the roadway, motorists
were cautioned today by the
State Highway Department.
Leaves turning all colors of the
rainbow provide color galore
along country highways and some
city streets, but falling to earth
the leaves become a threat to mo
toring safety in several ways.
Children love to play in piles of
raked-up leaves, sometimes even
hiding in a large pile of them, the
Department pointed out. For this
reason, motorists were urged to
watch out for children when
parking cars or driving through
areas where fallen leaves have
been piled.
In dry spells, home-owners of
ten rake leaves and burn them.
The smoke arising from burning
leaves may be blown across a
roadway, thereby creating a smoke
screen in front of approaching
drivel’s.
Another hazard may be created
during wet weather when accumu
lations of leaves on roadways be
come slippery. Sudden applica
tion of brakes on sections of a
street or highway where wet

Win At Fair

H boys entered dairy calves in
the State Fair, Columbia, October
24-29. They didn't do so bad eith

Eugene Wise of Newberry and
Julius Graham, Rt. 1, Silverstreet,
won first place in the Senior Calf
Class. Evans Bowers, Rt. 1, Little
Mountain, won first 1 place in the
Junior Yearling Class. Cleveland
Tobe, Rt. 1, Little Mountain, won
first place in the Three-Year Old
Class. Bennie Scurry and Patrick
Williams, Rt. 1, Silverstreet, won

Calf Club to get all dairy calf
club members to produce “Blue
Ribbon” calves. By doing this, we
will have better dairy and family
cows throughout the county.

Turkey Men To
Meet In County
The South Carolina Turkey Fed
eration will meet on Wednesday,
November 30 at the Hartford
Community Center near Newber
ry.
Lew Kalts, Mount Morris, Il
linois, popular official of The Na
tional Turkey Federation, will de
liver the main address. Mr. Walts
travels widely in carrying on his
duties and will be able to bring
to the Palmetto producers a first
hand account of the goings-on in
turkey circles over the nation.
The meeting will begin at noon
with a barbecued turkey dinner
served by the ladies of the com
munity. An election of officers for
the coming year will also be held.

%17HAT kind of a price tag can
v v you put on a game fish, say
a bass—striped, largemouth or
smallmouth? You can’t buy or
sell Mr. Bass on the open mar
ket, so there is no commercial
value to be placed. You can’t
put a dollar and cents sign on
the scales and come anywhere
near measuring the thrill that a
dedicated angler realizes when
he feels a “strike” or brings a
“lunker” to net.
This problem of evaluation was
onte that faced the California De
partment of Game and Fish when
it undertook legal action against
a chemical company after toxic
chemicals dumped into San Fran
cisco Bay were held responsible
for a kill of thousands of striped
bass, smelt, anchovies, sculpins
and other smaller fish. Under the
Fish and Game Code Section of
California law, the maximum
fine possible was $500 and this
would be, indeed, a low price to
pay for thousands of striped bass
—bass which ranged from 8 to 30
inches and averaged 6 pounds in
weight. The State decided in
stead to sue the company in civil
action to recover the value of the
fish destroyed.
Since there is no market price
for striped bass, how was this
value determined? It was done
on a replacement basis. It was
determined exactly how much it
would cost the Department cf
Fish and Game to obtain live
striped bass from a commercial
source in Oregon and transport
them to California. The total:
$13,369—and the State won its case
in a superior court trial v/hich is
expected to set an important
precedent for future pollution
ccuLol efforts in California.
The court victory was a satis
fying—but expensive—one for the
California Department of Fish
and Game. ''

Maple-blended Ice Cream Pie
Vi cup butter or margarine, melted 2 cups flaked coconut
Combine butter and coconut Press evenly into an ungreased 8-
or 9-inch pie pan. Bake in slow oven (300°F.) for 30 to 35 minutes,
or until golden brown. CooL
Fill crust with vanilla ice cream, using VA pints ice cream for
an 8-inch crust and 1 quart for 9-inch crust. Decorate with a maple
sugar leaf, if desired. Serve at once, or freeze. At serving time,
pour maple-blended syrup over the cut pieces.
