The Annual Bridge Party spon
sored by the Newberry Garden
club will be held at the Commun
ity hall on Wednesday, November
9, at 3:15 p.m. The charge will
be $1.00 per person, and proceeds
are used for upkeep of the Club’s
Roadside Park on the By-Pass.
A number of home-made cakes
will be given as score prizes and
refreshments will be served. Any
one who is interested in taking
part is asked to contact Mrs.

Burns Fatal To
R. W. Ickard
Robert Wise Ickard, 23, died
Wednesday morning at the Co
lumbia Hospital after being con
fined for the past 15 weeks for
burns received when a truck of
hot asphalt he was driving turned
over near Bishopville.
Mr. Ickard was born in the Mt.
Pleasant section of Newberry
County, a son of Dewey J. Ick
ard Sr. and Fonda Berley Ick
ard. He had spent most of His life
in Newberry and was a member
of Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church.
For the past 10 months he had
made his home at the Hill View
Apartments in Cayce. He was em
ployed by the Douglas Construc
tion Co. and was a member of Mt.
Pleasant Camp of Woodmen of the
World.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs.
Laufis Riley Ickard; one son,
Robert Wise Ickard Jr. of Cayce;
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dewey
J. Ickard* Sr. of Newberry; one
brother, Dewey J. Ickard Jr. of
Newberry and a number of uncles
and aunts.
Funeral services were conducted
at 3 p.m. Friday at Mt. Pleas
ant Methodist Church by Rev.
John P. Griffith, Rev. Thonias H.
Weeks, and Rev. Eben Taylor. Bur
ial was in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Billy
Riley, Jimmie Riley, Edward Ber
ley, Woodrow Ringer, Willie fin
ger Jr., and John Reese Jr.
Flower attendants were the
cousins.
J. Ebb Long, 92,
Died Sunday
J. Ebb Long, 92, died early Sun
day night at his home in the St.
Philip’s section of Newberr^
County. He' had been in declining
health for several years.
Mr. Long was born and reared
in Newberry County and was the
son of the late Mike M. and Vic
toria Schumpert Long. He was a
prosperous farmer as long as his
health permitted. Mr. Long was
one of the oldest members of Col
ony Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Corrie Gruber' Long, Pros
perity; two sons, Ira B. Long and
George M. Long, both of Prosper
ity; seven daughters, Mrs. Tommie
Lee Kinard, Mrs. Mattie Mae
Wicker, Mrs. Geneva Crumpton
and Miss Eugenia Long, all of
Prosperity, Mrs. Laura Monts and
Mrs. Mary Turner, both of West
Columbia, and Mrs. Nancy Cro
mer, of Florence; three brothers,
Malcolm L. Long of Prosperity,
James F. Long and J. L. Long,
both of Newberry; 39 grandchil
dren; 40 great-grandchildren, and
two step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conduct
ed Tuesday at 3 p.m. from Colony
Lutheran Church with Rev. H. A.
Dunlap and Rev. C. L. Richardson
conducting the service. Burial fol
lowed the service in the church ce
metery.
Active pallbearers were nep
hews and flower attendants were
nieces.
Honorary escort was composed
of the Colony Lutheran Church
Council; Dr. W. L. Mills, Dr. J.
A. Underwood, James Hutchinson,
Ashley Shealy, Horace Werts, Da
vid Luther Ruff, Ed Thomas, J.
W. Lominick, James Henry Davis,
and Rev. William Cloer.
Jesse Lee Mays, 69, died Wed
nesday night at his residence, Rt.
2, Clinton, after an illness of the
past five years.
Mr. Mays was born and reared
in Charleston, a son of the late
Robert Clar v an< j Laura Wilder
Mays. He made hik home in
Newberry ior more than 30 years
where he was a member of Ept
ing Memorial Methodist Church,
and was employed by the Mollo-
hon Branch of Kendall Mills until
he retired because of his health.
He had made his home on Rt. 2 f
Clinton, for the past several
years. He was a member of the
Woodman of the World. He was
twice married ;his first marriage
was to the late Frances Banks,
who died a number of years ago.
Hfe is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Alva McCarty Mays; one
son, Arthur L. Mays, of Joanna;
two brothers, - B. F. and R. C.
Mays, both of Newberry; one
grandson and one great grand
son.
Funeral services were conduct
ed at 4 p.m. Friday at Epting Me
morial Methodist Church by Rev.
Brice B. Blakeney, Rev. Paul L-
Walker, and Rev. James B. Mit
chell. Burial was in Rosemont Ce
metery.
Active pallbearers were Ray
Rickert, Frank Miller, E. D. Kib-

and Mr. Bartley.
