Timmerman Rites
Held Tuesday
Wallace B. Timmerman, 81, re
tired merchant and resident of
726 Boundary street died Monday
morning at the Newberry County
Memorial hospital after an illness
of the past three years.
Mr. Timmerman was born and
reared in Edgefield county, a son
of the late John and Savannah
Dorn Timmerman. He had made
his home in Newberry for more
than 60 years where he was as
sociated . in the grocery business
of Timmerman and Nesley on
Drayton street, and later he op
erated the W. B. Timmerman
grocery on Main street. He was
a member of Central Methodist
church.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Lillie Wright Timmerman;
one daughter, Mrs. Kenneth
(Bland T.) Campbell of Raleigh,
N. C.; two sisters, Mrs. Ola Jones
of Greenville, N. C. and Mrs.
Bess Powell of Aiken; two grand
children, Katherine and Carol
Campbell, of Raleigh, N. C.
Newberry Firm
To Build Church
Edward O. Cannon, President of
Cannon Construction and Supply
Co., Inc., Newberry, reports that
his company was awarded a con
tract in the amount of $77,975 for
a church at West Columbia. This
one-story structure, located at
Gunter Circle, is owned by Trinity
Methodist Church. It will be built
of brick, being 9,800 square feet,
and will be used for church and
educational facilities. The unus
ual feature of this job will be the
Cavity Walls.
Contract was awarded Septem
ber 14, and work will begin im
mediately with grading. Date of
expected completion is May 1,
1961.
Ten to twenty-five men will be 1
used on the job under the direc- I
tion of Carroll Counts, Little
Mountain.

Academy Exams
Congressman Bryan Dorn has
announced that Civil Service Ex
aminations for military academies,
including West Point, Annapolis,
Merchant Marine, and Air Force,
will be held in Anderson and
Greenwood at 8:30 a.m., Saturday,
November 12, 1960. Those inter-
This Civil Service Examination
must notify Congressman Dorn at
124 Federal Building, Greenwood,
South Carolina, before October 12.
This Civil Serwice Examination
is only a qualifying test to deter
mine the principal appointments
next year. Congressman Dorn ex
pressed the hope that every young
man interested in our national aca- i
demies will take this examination.

PTA Meeting
At Silverstreet
The Silverstreet Elementary
School, PTA met in the auditorium
last Tuesday night with the presi
dent, Mrs. Harold Hunter, presid
ing.
Mrs. Edith Bishop was in ;harge
of devotions.
Mrs. Helen Nichols, the guest
speaker, welcomed the teachers
and gave an inspiring talk on co
operation.
During the business session, re
ports were given by various stand
ing committee chairmen. The Fin
ance committee reported that the
PTA had purchased Melody Bells
and an Autoharp for the public
music classes, and had contributed
to the purchase of a movie pro
jector. All of these items are in
use at the school now.
The next meeting will be on the
third Tuesday in October.
