Major Engineering Improvements In
1961 Line For Ford Automobiles
The 1961 Ford features crisp i
new styling, new dimensions for
greater maneuverability, and ma
jor engineering improvements
such as 30,000-mile lubrication,
that will result in lower mainten
ance costs and more carefree op
eration.
James O. Wright, Ford Motor
Company vice president and Ford
Division general manager, said the
new Ford, nearly four inches
shorter and two inches narrower
than in 1960, will offer “a com
pletely new, fresh appearance in
the classic Ford tradition of
straight-line design.”
The new Ford line, to be intro
duced by Ford dealers on Septem
ber 29, consists of 16 models in
four series — Fairline, Fairlane
500, Galaxie and station wag. ns.
Added to the line are two new
models—a Galaxie Club Victoria
(two-door hardtop) and a six pas
senger Country Squire station wa
gon.
All six station wagon models,
from the two-door Ranch Wagon
to the nine-passenger, four door
Country Squire with simulated
wood paneling, have a new roll-
down rear window in the tailgate.
The tailgate itself is seven inches
wider than in 1960. The front-fac
ing third seat in nine-passenger
station wagons has been improved
and, when not in use, folds quick
ly into the floor.
A power operated rear window
is standard on the Country Squire
models and the 9-passenger Coun
try Sedan and optional on others.
Ford introduces an new 390-
cubic-inch Thunderbird Special V-
8 engine in 1961 that is designed
for effortless performance. The
Thunderbird 352 Special and the
Thunderbird 292 V-8’s, as well as
the Mileage Maker Six, all are
designed to deliver greater econ
omy on regular grade fuels.
The classic Ford look of the
high-styled 1961 model features
the traditional, crisp, straight-
line styling, graceful front fen
ders browned abovve widely-spac
ed headlights, full-width alumin
um grille, and the famous Galaxie
roof-line. Small, canted blades top
the sculptured rear quarter pan
els that terminate in large round
taillights thot readily establish
the new Ford’s identity.
Among imp’-ovemens in the Ford
optional equipment are a power
window master control switch
which can be used to “lock-out”
the operation of any or all win
dows, and improved circuit break
er protection for power seats and
windows.
Inside, the passenger seating
space offers the same “built for
people” comfort present in the
1960 Ford. Comfort and conven
ience, like quality and durability,
were designed into the car. Front
seat passengers will continue to
enjoy foam-padded seats and easy
entry and exit with the swept-
back windshield pillars which
eliminate the troublesome “dog
leg.”
Optional equipment includes
push button radio, heater and de
froster, two air conditioners, a
full range of power accessories,
tinted glass, wheel covers, electric
windshield washer, backup lights,
electric clock, Equa-Lock differ-
tial, safety paded dash and vis
ors, safety seat belts, four-day
manual seat, white sidewall tires
and two-tone paint.

From the side, the new Polara

The 1961 Polara offers a wide

The new car will make its debut

“The Lancer is a small car with
a big car ride,” Smith said. The
new compact is nearly two feet

The Lancer features wide use
