Are Announced
’ Arthur Leon Applegate, a native
of East McKeesport, Pennsylvania,
has been appointed Assistant Pro
fessor of Biology at Newberry
College. He received his B.S. de
gree from Wake Forest College
and the M.S. degree from the Uni
versity of South Carolina. He f has
a minor in chemistry.
" Mr. and Mrs. Applegate have
two children; Michael and Martha.
They are members of the Lutheran
Church.
Dr. Walter H. Beck, a native of
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has been
appointed Associate Professor of
Education and Psychology at
Newberry College. He holds the
A.B. degree from Northwestern
College, the M.A. degree from the
University of Wisconsin, the Ed.D.
degree from Temple University,
the B.D. and S.T.M. degrees from
the Lutheran Theological Semi
nary in Philadelphia. He has
taught at Immanuel Lutheran
College, Concordia Teachers Col
lege, Midland' College and Texas
Lutheran College. He has served
as a Lutheran Pastor in South
beloit, Illinois, since 1956. Dr. Beck
Will' teach psychology and one or
two sections of Bible.
^ He is married and has a daugh
ter who will be a senior at Carth
age College.
Dr. James Frank Cummings,
a native of Denver, Colorado, has
been appointed Associate Profess
or of Education and Psychology
at Newberry College. He received
the B.S., M.A. and Ed.D. degrees
from the University of Alabama.
He has taught in the Birmingham,
Alabama schools and has served
as an instructor and Director of
Audio-Visual Service at the Uni
versity of Alabama. He will teach /
courses in Education, including
Directed Teaching.
Dr. and Mrs. Cummings have
two daughters, Pamela and Gwen
dolyn. They are members of the
Lutheran Church.
Lester Rufus Ruth, Jr., a native
of Alliance, Ohio, has ' been a-
ppointed Assistant Professor of
French and English. He received
the A.B. and M.A. degrees from
Emory University. He has taught
at Truett-McConnell Junior Col
lege, Jackson High School and
Richmond Academy. He will teach
French and English Fundamentals
and Composition.
Mr. and Mrs. Ruth have two
daughters, Tressa Renee, and
Lola Ann. They are members of
the Methodist Church.
John L. Weise?id, a native of
Washington County, Ohio, has been
appointed Assistaiht Professor of
Commerce at Newberry College.
He'received the LL.B. and LL.M.
degrees from Ohio Northern Uni
versity. Hf-s major field is law and
economics He has additional grad
uate study at Kent State univer
sity and Miami university. He has
been employed as a public utility
official and practiced law for fif
teen years in Cleveland, Ohio. He
served for five years as Head of
the Business Department of Miami
Military Academy. '
Mr. and Mrs. Weisend have one
daughter, Hilma. They are mem
bers of the Episcopal church.
‘ M rs. Ruth Virginia Graham
Weber, a native of Newberry, has
been appointed Instructor of Bus
iness Administration at Newberry
College. She received the A.B. de
gree from Newberry College and
has done additional study at the
University of South Carolina. She
was employed in office and secre
tarial work in Columbia for more
than thirteen years. She will teach
commercial subjects in the Busi
ness Department.
Mrs. Weber is married to the
Reverend Harry Weber, Assist
ant Professor of Bible and Religi
ous Education. She is a member of
the Lutheran Church of the Re
deemer, Newberry.

ham have moved to 610 Clara St.
to make their home.
Mr. and Mrs. Ben Sorrow have
moved to 826 O’Neal St,
Mr. and Mrs. Freddie Cain are
now residing at 2107 Charles St.

family have moved to 1907 Har
rington St. in the house they re
cently purchased.
Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Shealy
are making their home at 2112 Os

On Wednesday afternoon, Aug
ust 17, a group of children from
the community visited the Coun
ty Library in Newberry. These
children are members of the
Children’s Book Club' and are
very interested in books and lib
rary work. Mrs. Cromer and Mrs.
Shinn made the trip most inter
esting by showing’ them over the
library and explaining the work
of the library to them. The chil
dren enjoyed looking at different
books in the library and they were
given the privilege of “checking
out” books to' carry home with
them. After this, the librarians
served cookies and cokes to the
group. Those making the trip
were Ronda Vaughn, Ebbie Long,
Mike Dipner, Bill Spearman, Mrs.
Vivian Montgomery and Mrs.
Louise McAdams.
Tuesday afternoon, August 30,
brought to a close the summer
work for part of the Community
Library. We have had a Book
Club and a Story Hour for the
children during the summer
months, but with school starting,
the Book Club will not have regu
lar meetings. However, the Story
Hour will continue each week. This
last meeting was climaxed with a
picnic to which the mothers and
little friends were invited. Games
were enjoyed in the yard at the
club house and the picnic lunch
was served at 5:30. Members of
the Book Club were given Book-
Markers. Thirty-six members and
guests enjoyed this occasion.
There is much interest being
shown in the work of the library
and we are most grateful to ev
eryone for their interest and help.
This past month there were 235
books checked out.
Thursday, September 1st, was
Clinic Day, and quite a number
were there for their shots. It is
most gratifying to see the grow
ing interest among the people in
A happy occasion was enjoyed
by twenty-one little friends of
Renee Brannon at her birthday
party on Friday, August 12th, at
the Community Center. Renee was
five years old and is the daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. F. P. Brannon of
Chappells.
The regular club meetinip was
held orf Tuesday night,-September
6th. Everyone enjoyed a delicious
covered dish supper and -this was
followed by a devotional given by
W. D. Montgomery; then the busi
ness meeting was presided over
by the President.
At this time plans for the Car
nival, which is to be held on
Tuesday night, October 3rd, were
announced. Everyone is looking
forward to an evening of fun and
entertainment.

CLEMSON—Dr. Taze L. Senn
has been named head of the Clem
son College Horticulture Depart
ment, School of Agriculture Dean
Milton D. , Farrar announced
last Thursday. He replaces Dr.
Thomas B. Hagler who resigned
to become Chairman of the plant
science division of the Auburn
University state extension staff.
Dr/'Senn, a native df Newberry,
graduated from Clemson College
in 1939 with the B. S. degree in
horticulture. He received both the
M. S. and the Ph. D. degrees in
horticulture from the University
of Maryland. He is married to the
former Marguerite Busby and
they are the parents of three sons
and live in Clemson.
In the Clemson horticulture de
partment Senn worked as student
assistant during his undergrad
uate training. Soon after gradua
tion he was appointed assistant
horticulturist at the South Caro
lina Experiment station. The fol
lowing year he was an instruc
tor in the botany department. In
1946 he joined the horticulture de-
