A water boy on a rail road at
Bennettsville at the beginning, but
General Manager of that rail road
later, climbing steadily to the top.
Next I hear of him as a Bank
Cashier in Bennettsville, but he
couldn’t hide his light under a
bushel measure, so he became
known for his sagacity, the sound
judgment that always commended
him to the attention of men of
affairs.
He accepted a call to The South
Carolina National Bank and pilo
ted it,.through the Great Depress
ion. Hf, ^ became President and
Chairman of the Board, but his
counsel was sought and is sought
by business leaders throughout the
State. But even the poor and
humble have ever found him ready
to serve. 1 '
Mr. Edwards is a director of
The Seaboard Air Line Rail Road,
with which he once worked -‘as
water boy. *
Mr. Edwards ife director of the
South Carolina Electric and Gas
Company and its several subsidi
aries, as well as a dozen other
enterprises. ' >
• “B. M.”, as he is affectionately
known, is the incarnate spirit of
joyous, bountiful hospitality and
it is part of his abounding de
light in doing things for. others-
He is truly a man of notable a-
chievement but the fellowship of
his life transcends even the fruit
ion of his monumental labors.
He was an expert in the service
of the Treasury of the United
States, President of the American
Bankers Association and is now
Chairman of the Board of two vast
Rail Roads and director of the
American Telephone and Telegraph
the largest corporation in the
world.
B. M. EDWARDS—
A most extraordinary man,—
banker, timberman, rail roader snd
general consultant to businessmen
throughout the State, consultant
also of the United States Treas
ury. Verily a friend of man in all
walks of life.
All that developed during the
years; it didn’t happen overnight
nor was it a mere happen so.
James F. Byrnes
An established reputation within
and throughout our State; a fig
ure prominent on the National
scene in many and varied services;
well known in the diplomacy of
the world.
Could the most imaginative have
pictured the quick witted lad in
Charleston as an eminent man in
International affairs? If one seeks
inspiration here it is and with
glamor.
Mr. Byrnes began his career as
a stenographer and still uses the
hieroglyphics making memoranda.
Successively he served as Court
reporter, Representative in Con
gress; as Representative I think
he came under the influence of
President Wilson. Later, as United
States Senator, he was in reality
the Senate leader for the program
of President Roosevelt. He served

of President Roosevelt he was
called to serve as Secretary of

Full of honors and somewhat
(weary, Mr. Byrnes came home,

many and served as Governor of

In all his career Mr. Byrnes en

freely to them in a crucial era.
When I think of the career of
Mr. Byrnes I recall the Scripture
