Newberry, South Carolina Mr. and Mrs. William McConnell Fennell of 2008 McDowell street announce the engagement of their daughter, Molly Regina, of Char lotte, and Dr. Henry Clifford Al exander, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Clifford Alexander of Charlotte. The wedding will take place on September 25 at the First Baptist Church in Newberry. The bride-elect attended New berry schools, Mars Hill Junior College and the Duke „ University School of Nursing. She is present ly teaching in the Charlotte Pres byterian Hospital School of Nurs- ing. The bridegroom-elect attended Davidson College, Duke, Univers ity and the Duke School of Medi- euie ,and the Medical College of the Hospital of St. Bartholomew, London, England. In college he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha and is now a member of the Bach- lor’s Club of Charlotte, where he is engaged in the private practice of medicine. P. Crooks, President, on the Mt. Bethel-Garmany Road on Wednesday morning, May 11. This was the first quarterly ineeting of the Council elected to serve for the current year. Mrs. Crooks opened the meeting by reading the hymn, "For tine Beauty of the Earth.” She called attention to the beau tiful silver pitcher which was awarded by the South Carolina State Fair Association in 1953 for the best collection of old roses. The members who had charge of the winning collection were Mrs. Richard L. Baker, Mrs. Price J. Padgett and Mrs. E. E. Westwood Sr. This pitcher is the pen^anent property of the council. Mrs. Louis C. Floyd and Mrs. Clem 1. Youmans made interest ing reports on the state conven tion of the Carden Club of South Carolina held recently in Ander son. They recalled that Mrs. Bail er as state president, received high praise for her administration, that several of the garden clubs in Newberry won awards, and that the banquet speaker was a New- berrian, Dr. James C. Kinaid.^ The treasurer, Mrs. L. L. Halti- wanger, reported the good finan cial stains of Council funds. The Council voted to cooperate again with the Newberry-Saluda County Fair Association in spon soring the annual flower show. It was decided to continue the work in Therapy now being done by the clubs. The Council voted to change the time of the regular quarterly meeting to the first Tuesday. "A called meeting of the Council was announced for May 25 to con sider special items of business. Mr. and Mrs. T. Roy Summer Jr. attended the Southeastern Merchants' Mart which was held at Radio Center, Charlotte, Sun day. They purchased fall merchan dise for T. Roy Summer, Inc. Mrs. E. A. Carpenter and Mrs. Tom Graham spent Wednesday in Atlanta where they purchased new summer merchandise .'or Carpen ters. The annual Newberry County 4- H Rally Day was held Saturday, May 14th at Bush River School. This was a big event for the 4- H club members of Newberry County. There were many reasons for this. This event brings to a close the 4-H club meetings for the year 1959-1960. Also at this meeting new officers of the New berry Coynty 4-H Council i are elected. The newly elected officers are Christy Livingston, president; Kenny Caldwell, vice president; Murrie Alice Shealy, secretary and Wayne Satterwhite, treasur er. These are very outstanding club members and the council is looking forward to working with them during the coming year. There was another event at this meeting which was very import ant. An Achievement trophy was given to the boys and girls club which had completed the best all round 4-H club work for the year 1969-1900. This trophy was pre sented to the Pomaria boys and girls club. We wish to congratu late their officers for the out- standirg work' they have done. This trophy was presented by the Newberry Jaycees. The climax of tne day and the last event which was enjoyed by all was the presentation of the athletic trophy. Each year, boys and girls, participated in the dif ferent athletic events held during the day and the* club winning th| most points was presented a tro phy. Those club members which par- Lra ticipated in the program were: James Dominick, Anita Killian, Allen Bickley, Ronnie Wicker, Bobby Lominick, Elaine Minick, Lizzie Mae Berry and Kenny Cald well. This was truly a 4-H Rally Day. The business meeting began at 10:00.
