Speers Street PTA To Talk Bond Issue The Speers Street Parent-Teach er Association meeting has been changed from the third to the sec ond Thursday, and will be hied to night at the school auditorium at 7:30. The program will be** panel discussion of the school bond sue. Members of the County Board of Education will be panel ists, Jimmy Coggins will serve as moderator. Hawkins Rites Held Thursday Allen Samuel Hawkins, 55, of Rt. 4, Newberry, died Wednesday at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital. He was stricken a short time earlier at his home. Mr. Hawkins was born and reared in the St. Luke’s section of Newberry County, a son of the late Paul and Ann Vaughn Hawdc- ins. He ^ d operated a turkey farm on icute Four for a number of years, and was a member of St. Luke’s Luther*.i Church. Surviving ar* nis wife, Mrs. Louise Stock.nan Hawkins; three sons, Thomas Edward, Fred and Allen S. Hawkins, Jr., all of New r - berry; two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Nobles of Prosperity and Mrs. Maybelle Counts of Newberry; four brothers, Maxey, Bates and Lawrence Hawkins all of Pros perity and Wilbur Hawkins of Co lumbia; and four grandchildren. Funeral services were conduct ed Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church by Dr. Thomas F. Suber and Rev. David Templeton. Burial was in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers were Elmer Kunkle, Thomas Hawkins, Clyde Hawkins, Paul Hawkins, George Counts, Ralph Nobles, Voight Kunkle. Honorary escort was composed of Fred Dominick, W. C. Huff man, J. F. Hawkins, Horace Cro mer, Harold Ruff, Thomas Buz- hardt, and members of the St. Luke’s Lutheran Church Council. Mrs. Dennis, 82, Service Monday Mrs. Minnie Coats Dennis, 82, wife of the late Z. Wright Dennis of Rt. 4, Newberry, died Saturday afternoon at Mills Clinic, Pros perity, after several years declin ing health and an illness of sev eral months. Mrs. Dennis was born and reared in Newberry County, a daughter of the late John and Jane Dennis Coats. She spent most of her life in the Hartford section of Newberry County where her husband, who died in 1959, was a dairy farmer. She was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Re deemer. Surviving are two sons, Leon C. and Harry W. Dennis, both of Rt. 4, Newberry; a daughter, Miss Ruby Dennis of Woodruff and Newberry; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was the last member of her imme diate family. Funeral services were conducted Monday at 4 p.m. at McSwain Funeral Home by the Rev. Henry A. McCullough. Burial followed in Rosemont Cemetery. Candidates With No Opposition Said Noi Hill At a meeting of the Newberry County Democratic Executive Committee held recently at the Newberry County courthouse, with Pinckney N. Abrams presid ing, unopposed candidates were declared nominees of the party. It was announced that the first of five speaking engagements would be held at Prosperity Ele mentary School auditorium on Wednesday, May 18 at 8 pan. The speaking will be preceded by a barbecue supper. The second meeting will take place at the Whitmire City Hall on May 28 at 8 p.m.; the third at Po- maria school on the evening of June 1. A supper will also precede the speaking at Pomaria. The fifth and final meeting will take place at the Newberry Coun ty Courthouse the night before the election at 8 p.m. Unopposed candidates include: Auditor Ralph Black, Sheriff Tom M. Fellers, Cleric of Court, Burke M. Wise; Treasurer J. Ray Dawk ins; Superintendent of Education James D. Brown; Coroner George R. Summer; Magistrates John P. Foster of Whitmire,, Ben F. Dawk ins of Newberry and W. B. Wicker of Prosperity. Youth Dance Be Saturday Night All high school students of Newberry County have been in vited to attend a formal dance, sponsored by the Civic League, to be held at the Community Hall Saturday night from 8:30 until midnight. Music will be furnished by the College N Dance Orchestra, directed by Prof. Charles Pruitt. - Newberry County’s 1960 Queen of Hearts, Miss Joyce Swygert, and her escort will begin the dance by leading the Grand March. Refreshrpents will be served during the evening. Serving as chaperones will be Dr. and Mrs. E. M. Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dukes, Mr. and Mrs. J. Howard Clark, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Blackwell, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Ringer, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Stone and Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Wiseman. Variety Show At Silverstreet The eighth grade of Silverstreet Elementary school will sponsor a Gospel and Variety show Friday night at 8 p.m. at the auditorium. The show will feature the Bar nett Bros, quartet, the Sellars Brothers and the Dixieland Play boys, all of WSPA-TV; Lee the Magician, Master of Magic, and Hambone and Egghead, “The Blackface Funnyboys.” Tickets may be secured from Supt. John Grady Long, from any member of the 8th grade, or at the door., Proceeds will be used to buy a gift for the school. The public is urged to attend and enjoy an evening of fun and entertainment. Park Named Chi Beta Phi Head Dr. C. B. Park, acting president of Newberry College was re-elect ed President of Chi Beta Phi, a National Honorary Science Frat ernity at the eighteenth national convention at Furman University on May 6-7. Delegates attended the conven tion from Iowa, New York, In diana, West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina. Kendall Company Earning High The Kendall Company has post ed a 26% increase in earnings for the first twelve weeks of 1960, compared with the similar period of 1959, President Richn.d R. Higgins told stockholders in an interim repprt issued today. The .Kendall Company manufactures surgical dressings, textiles, non- wxrven fabrics and polyethylene ad hesive tapes. Net earnings for the first 12 weeks of 1960 were $1,082,000 or $1.03 per common share, com pared with $857,000 or 81 cents per share earned for the same per iod of 1959. Kendall’s sales of $25,626,000 were down slightly from $25,896,000 for the compar able period of 1959. Mr. Higgins said that earnings this year were enhanced as a re sult of the consolidation of elastic goods manufacturing at Seneca, S. C., whereas a year ago the company sustained substantial costs in connection with the Sene ca move. Stockholders were told that de mand for various consumer health products has been strong and that new market opportunities have been developed for some specialty products in non-woven fabrics and protective pipe wrap tapes. In the general textile field, Kendall con tinues to operate against a good backlog of orders even though in coming business is somewhat slow er than it was in the late fall. Martm-Wilson Martin How, 59, Mr. and Mrs. William Jeffer son Martin of Newberry announce the engagement of their daugh ter, Kathleen, and Randolph Lee Wilson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Le- land Smith Wilson of NeVrberry. The wedding is to take place in July. Bnmer-Griffith Mr. and Mrs. Robert Raysor Bruner announce the engagement of their daughter, Harriet Anne, to Eugene Cannon Griffith, son of Judge and Mi's. Steve Campbell Griffith. The wedding will take place at Central Methodist Church on August 26. Martin Luther Flow, 69, died Monday night at his home in Ches ter County after several years of declining health. He was a native of Lancaster County but had made his home in Joanna most of his life. Among his survivors is* a sister, Mrs. Robert McMeekin of, New berry. Funeral services were conduct ed Wednesday at Epworth Meth odist Church in Joanna by Rev. Hugh Bickley and the Rev. Perry E. Turner. Burial was in Rosemont Cemetery, Clinton. Miss Marguerite Burns return ed to her position at the State Highway Department, Columbia, Monday after spending several weeks at her home on Boundary St. recuperating after surgery. Mrs. C. I. Youmans, Mrs. E. W. Yates and Mrs. Lucile Foster of Newberry, and Miss Pearl West of Columbia left about ten days ago for a trip to New York. Miss West became ill while there, and she and Mrs. Youmans returned to Columbia and Newberry. BIRTH OF TWINS M-Sgt. E-8 and Mrs. Bonnie Berley of Fort Sill, Okla. an nounce the birth of twin daugh ters, Linda and Brenda, on April 18 at the Base Hospital at Fort Sill. The girls weighed six pounds, 11 ounces, and five pounds, 14 ounces respectively. The Berleys also have th-ee other girls, ages 9, 5 and 4. Mrs. Berley is the for mer Allie Rae Cannon.
