ELECTION
State of South Carolina.
County of Newberry.
Notice is hereby given that,
pursuant to the School 'Board Act
> (Sections 21-971, et seq., CODE
OP LAWS OF SOUTH CAROU-
NA FOR 1952, as amended), and
resolutions adopted by the New
berry County Board of Education
on February 23, 1960, and March
22, I960, a Special Election will
be held in Newberry county, on
Tuesday, May 17, 1960, for the
purpose of submitting to the qual
ified electors of said County the
following question, viz.:
Shall the Newberry County
Board of Education be empowered
to issue, either as a single issue
or from time to time as several
separate issues, not exceeding
Eight Hundred Forty-eight Thou
sand and no 1100 ($848,000.00)
Dollars of general obligation
bonds of Newberry county, whose
proceeds shall be expended to de
fray the cost of making capital
improvements to the schools in
Newberry County?
The polls will open at eight
'o’clock in the forenoon at the
polling places named herein and
will close at six o’clock in the af
ternoon of Tuesday, May 17th,

QUALIFICATIONS for voting:
1, Each person offering to
vote in this election must have
resided in the State of South Car
olina for two years, in Newberry
County for one year and in the
precinct at which he offers to
vote for four months, all prior to
May 17, 1960.
2, Each person offering to
vote must have duly registered
on the county books of registry
for Newberry county in the pre
cinct at which he offers to vote
during the period September 3,
1957, to April 16, 1960, both in
clusive.
3, As required by the South
Carolina Election Law, each per
son offering to vote shall present
his registration certificate.
The managers shall administer
to each person offering to vote
an oath that he is qualified to
vote at this election, according to
the Constitution of this State and
that he has not voted during this
election.
The managers have the power
to fill a vacancy in their number,
and if none of the managers at
tend, the citizens can , appoint
from among the qualified voters,
managers, who after being duly
sworn, can continue the election.
At the close of the election the
managers and clerks must pro
ceed publicly to open the ballot
box and count the ballots therein,
and continue without adjournment
until the same is completed, and
make a statement of the results
of such election, and sign the
same. Within three days there
after, the chairman of the mana
gers, or some one designated by
the managers, must deliver to the
Commissioners of Election the poll
list, the box coptaining the bal
lots and written statements of

met at the home of Mrs. T. P.
Crooks Thursday afternoon, May
5 with Mrs. D. W. A. Neville, Mrs.
Louis C. Floyd and Mrs. O. J.
Wilson, associate hostesses.
The president, Miss Grace Sum
mer, called the meeting to order,
and the ritualistic service was
held. Mrs. L. G. McCullough, Me
morial chairman, conducted a most
impressive service in memory of
the only departed member dur
ing 1959, Mrs. Fannie Metis May
er. After reading a • beautiful
poem, prayer was offered. A mo
tion was made that a copy be sent
to the family of the deceased.
During the business session, re
ports were heard from all officers
and chairmen. Miss Sudie Dennis,
Girls State Chairman, reported
that six girls had been selected
and accepted to attend Girls State
in June at the University of S. C.
Mrs. W. H. Davis gave a grati
fying child welfare report, saying
that she had sent her report to
Mrs. Audley Ward, department
child welfare chairman.
