Alameda, California
Alameda, California, is affectionately termed the “Isle of Pleasant
Hiving” by its ii.habitants. It emerged from territory once part of a
huge grant from the King of Spain to Luis Peralta. When Peralta
Claimed the land 150 years ago, it was a peninsula covered with
giant oaks and abundant with wildlife. Man and time reshaped its
boundaries, until one day a tidal canal (or estuary) severed the part
that was to become Alameda from the mainland in order to provide
for inner-harbor facilities. An island was created, and is now a
thriving city—a distinctly separate community with many fine poten
tialities.

The town of Alameda was in
corporated in 1854 and became a
city in 1872.
One of the vital economic fac
tors supporting the business and
commerce of the area is the tre
mendous U S. Naval Air Station,
developed on filled land. It faces
the Pacific Ocean from the wes
terly tip of the city. Dedicated in
1941, the huge military reserva
tion played a key role in World
War II and today brings the 1
buying power of a $50,000,000 an
nual payroll into the region.
Alameda is a few mipnt^s’
driving distance from the hub ot
cosmopolitan San Francisco and
its Eastbay neighbor, Oakland.
An underwater tube and five
bridges link the city to the main
land and major highways. At the
last official census in 1954, Ala
meda’s population was more than
70,000. Present expansion and de
velopment plans are expected tc
attract an additional 6000 in the
next few years. The city encom
passes 25 square miles, 77 miles
of streets, and is at an average
elevation of 15.5 feet above sea
level.

This week’s letter: “I am 14
and my father won’t let me
date or have a boyfriend. The
parents of most of my girl friends
are beginning to let them date and
have company. But, I can’t al
though I do have a boyfriend. Why
can’t I have dates like my friends
do?” '
She didn’t say, but apparently
our young friend is having dates
that her father knows nothing
■about. This being the case, we feel
that we must point out that this is
certainly no way to earn his trust
and confidence—and the right to
have dates and to receive company
at home as her friends do.
The first duty of a girl of four
teen is to honor and obey her par
ents. If her parents say that she
is not to have dates, then she is
wrong to do so—for two reasons:
one, she is almost certain to be
“caught” at it; secondly, it’s dis
honest. like cheating at cards or
in a contest. If we “cheat" in little
ways, sooner or later, we begin to
“cheat” in bigger things.
Another thought: Because some
people do certain things, this does
not necessarily make it right for
us to do them. Too many teens
(and grownups, too, for that mat
ter) never seem to understand this.
But my family can’t buy a new car
this year just because the next door
neighbors did. My family can’t go
to Florida this winter just because
some people we know can afford
the time and money to do so. The
lamest excuse in the world for
wanting to do something is that
someone else has done it or is go
ing to do it.
We must live our own lives,
each individual, each member of
a family. And, teens must learn
that their parents are sometimes
“right” as well as “wrong.” Chil
dren may not always agree with
decisions and established rules
and regulations where dating is
concerned, but they should abide
by them and work to earn the
greatest confidence and respect
from their parents.
