April 6th at the Newberry Me
morial Hospital. Mrs. Dorroh is

ounce daughter, Cheryl Ann, who

State Meeting
Garden Club
The City of Anderson blossom
ed with "ray spring hats as some
600 delt *:es arrived last Friday
to partic’ \te in activities of the
30th Annu, ' Conventon of the
Garden Club of South Carolina.
The Convention officially open
ed at 2:00 p.m. at Anderstm Col
lege, but prior to that time, mem
bers of the board were entertain
ed at a coffee at the Calhoun Ho
tel by Mrs. Francis Hart, president
of the Anderson Council of Garden
Clubs, and Mrs. Hugh McGee, co-
chairman of local arrangements
for the Convention.
The board of the Garden Club
of South Carolina was given a
dinner at the Anderson Country
Club Thursday night preceding
the State Convention with Mrs.
Douglas McDougald and Mrs.
Hugh Anew co-hostesses.
Among those attending the
Convention from Newberry were
Mrs. Richard L. Baker, President
of the Garden Club of South Caro
lina, Mrs. Clem I. Youmans Cor
responding Secretary of the Gar
den Club of South Carolina, Mrs.
Don Rook, M: norial Gardens
Trustee, Mrs. VST. Roy Anderson,
Mrs. T. J. Eskridge, Mrs. I. M.
Smith, Mrs. Louis Floyd, Mrs.
Mrs. James C. Kinard and Mrs.
James F. Coggins, who was per
sonal Page for Mrs. Baker at the
Convention.
After the business session Fri
day, a tea was held at the home
of Mr. and Mrs W. E. Gallant.
Friday evening the banquet was
held at the Clemson house. Dr.
James C. Kinard was the feat
ured speaker and delighted his
audience with his usual eloquence.
Attending the banquet at this
time were Mrs. Cannon Blease and
Mr. Richard L. Baker, mother and
husband of the president.
Four national awards were pre
sented by Mrs. Richard L. Baker,
State President and National Aw
ards Chairman at the banquet.
Events scheduled for Saturday
included a conservation brealcfast
at which Mrs. E. N. Merriwether,
director of the South Atlantic re
gion, spoke, at the Awards lunch
eon at the Junior high school in
Anderson. Scores of Awards were
presented. Mrs. Baker presided
with Mrs. Gary Paschal, first V-
president and Mrs. J. Gordon
Floyd, 2nd V-president, present
ing the Awards.
I'he Newberry Garden club re
ceived a white ribbon for the best
club report in the State for Gar
den clubs with 25 members, or
less. And Mrs. Baker received a
surprise Award when Mrs. Gor
don Floyd of Spartanburg, 2nd
V-president, presented her a life
membership in the National
Council of State Garden clubs* on
behalf of the executive board be
cause of the fine work she had
done during the past year.
Among the favors bestowed on
Mrs. Baker during the convention
were red roses presented to her
by her own Garden club, the New
berry Garden club, and a beauti
ful white orchid given by the
Council of Newberry garden clubs.
She also received numerous
flowers and attentions from the
Convention and other friends.

coming year.
Claudia, a rising junior, is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl
B. Setzler of Newberry. She is a

ers, Newberry Players, Music
Education Club and circulation
staff of The Indian, college news
