Davis, 69, died Friday morning at his home on Drayton St. after a lingering illness. He was born in Fairfield Coun ty, the son of the late R. E. and Marian Senn Davis. Pripr to his retirement he was employed by Newberry Mills Inc., and also had operated ay taxi service. He was a member of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ella Cook Davis; a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Hawkins of Kings port, Tenn.; one brother, Robert E. Davis of Newberry; and five sisters, Mrs. Florence Crump, Mrs. J. R. Culley, Mrs. J. T. Vaughn, Mrs. W. B. Thornton, and Mrs. Henry W. Swindler, all of Newberry; and one grandson. Funeral services were conduct ed at 3 p.m. Sunday from Whitak er Funeral Home by Dr. P. L. Grier. ‘Burial was in Rosemont Cemetery. Active pallbearers were John Evans, “Bud” Morris, E. P. Payne, Leroy Wilson, Bob Hunter and Frank Jones. Assisting with flowers were Mrs. Anna Hamilton, Mrs. Ruby Jones, Mrs. Idelle Payne ,Mrs. Ruth Davis, Mrs. Clara Ellen Buddin and Mrs. Doshia Bouk- night. ; The following county girls will participate in the 1960 May Day exercises to be held on April 30 on the quadrangle at Newberry College: Senior Class: Ruby Bank^, Su san Mayfield, Mildred Long. Junior Class: Barbara Hawkins, Frances Blackwell, Jackie Crooks, Mary Jane Fellers. Sophomore Class: Claudia Setz- ler, Mary Ann Watkins and Nancy DeHart. TOURNAMENT Tickets for the Little Four Bas ketball tournament to be held at Greenville Memorial Auditorium February 26 and 27 are on sale at the public relations office of New berry College. They may be se cured by contacting L. C. Gra ham. Vie For Honor Each class at Newberry College selected three girls to participate in the “Miss Newberrian” contest. At a tea which was held in Kauf- mann Hall recently, these fifteen girls were judged on facial and photogenic beauty by a panel of judges, composed of the annual editors from Presbyterian and Wofford Colleges, a member of the annual staff from Erskine College, the editor and business manager of the annual from Newberry High School and Leon D. Nichols, local photographer. The winner of the title “Miss Newberrian” will be announced in May when the 1960 edition of the Newberrian will be presented dur ing chapel exercises. 1 Miss Frances G. Blackwell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward L. Blackwell of Newberry, and Miss Claudia C. Setzler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl B. Setzler of Newberry. W. E. Elmore Died Saturday William E. Elmore, 77, died Saturday night at the Lowman Home. He was born in Newberry County, the son of the late W. Rooert and Muscogie Hargrove Elmore. He was a former merchant and was in the finance business. Af ter his retirement, he was a rep resentative of the Watkir^s Prod ucts Co. He was a member of the Luth eran Church of the Redeemer and of Amity Lodge No. 87, A.F.M. His wife, Mrs. Lucy Suber El more, died in 1957. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Katherine Elmore Mitchell of Newberry and Whitmire, and a sister, Mrs. Lucy E. Kibler of Bowman. Funeral services were conduct ed at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Whit aker Funeral Home by Rev. Hen ry A. McCullough Jr. and Rev. L. E. Blackwelder. Burial was in Rosemont Cemetery. Active pallbearers included Paul E. Kibler, Dick Shealy, Hen ry Martin Mil v *r, Ray Abrams, John Robert Sr Her and Carl Setz ler. Honorary escort was composed of Pat Mitchell, Aiken Feagle, Ira L. Meets Tuesday A business meeting of the New berry Civic League will be held Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Community Hall, according to Mrs. J. E. Wiseman, president. Report of the nominating commit tee will be. made and officers for the ensuing year elected. *k large attendance is urged for this im portant meeting. Mills Infant Service Monday Funeral services for the infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Mills of Columbia, who died Sunday afternoon at Providence Hospital were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at the graveside in Rosemont Ce metery in Newberry by the Rev. W. L. Bagwell. Besides his parents he is sur vived by one half-sister and four half-brothers; his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. B. W. Mills of Lex ington and Mrs. Ethel Robinson of Columbia and a number of uncles and aunts. Conferences On Aging Problems A schedule of group conferences preliminary to the county surveys to be conducted under the South Carolina Legislative Committee on Problems of the Aging, has been set up for consultations with coun ty committees which will conduct the surveys, according to Mrs. Martha Thomas Fitzgerald of Richland County, Committee chair man. Seven centers over the state have been selected for the area meetings. The area which includes Newberry will hold a meeting in Columbia on March 4.
