BIRTH OF SON
Mr. and Mrs. SydniT Carter are
receiving congratulations upon
the arrival of a son on Thursday,
February 4th in a Charleston hos
pital. The baby has been n.imeed
for his grandfather, Richard Ba
ker. The Cartel's have another
child, Syd, five years old. Mm.
Carter is the former Betty Baker
of Newberry.
Mr. and Mrs. A. T. Neely Jr.
announce the birth of a daugh
ter, February 6 at the York Coun
ty Hospital, Rock Hill. The grand
parents are Mrs. A. T. Neely Sr.
and Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Garlington
of Newberry.
Chappells Works
On Clinic At
Center
On Saturday afternoon, January
30, from three to four o’clock,
coffee was served at the Commun
ity Center for the benefit of the
March of Dimes.
From a table covered with a
white cloth and centered with an
arrangement oi cupids, hearts and
ribbons, was served sandwiches,
cheese straws and cookies. Mrs.
beautiful silver service at one end
of the table.

W. A. Webb poured coffee from a
A Valentine motif was used for
the decorations at the regular
meeting of the Community Club
on Tuesday night, February 2.
The table in the hall was center
ed with a bowl of red roses. In
the dining room a valentine ar
rangement centered the guest
table and cupids were used on
the othpr tables. An arrangement
of cupids and hearts was used on
the bar. A delicious supper was
served to the members and guests.
A door prize, an artificial ar
rangement of red roses in a milk
glass compote, given by Mrs. C.
H. Smith of the Ninety-Six Flor
ist Shop, was won by Mrs. J. C.
Arant.
After supper a short business
meeting was held in the auditor
ium and this was followed by a
most interesting program.
W. D. Montgomery introduced
Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Brooks of
Newberry and they showed slides
made on their recent trip to Rus
sia; this was followed by a ques
tion and answer period. The club
is very appreciative of this pro
gram.
Work is continuing on the Med
ical Clinic at the Club Center.
There is work yet to be done but
a lot has been accomplished and
in spite of the weather conditione,
quite a number of patients at
tended the Clinic on Thursday af
ternoon.

Members Hear
Mrs. Summer
The Calvin Croaler Chapter of
UDC met Tuesday evening at the
home of Mrs. T. P. Crooks. As
sociate hostesses were Mrs. Rea
Feagle, Mrs. L, W. ttedenhaugh,
Miss Josephine Shannon, Miss
Masie Dominick.

traduced the leader of the pro
gram, Mrs. A. M. Summer, who
took the place of Mrs. James
Smith who was unable to attend.
Mrs. Summer gave an interesting
aper on Jefferson Davis.
Mrs. Summer stated that Jef
ferson Davis resigned his seat in
Congress to become a colonel in
the A.rmy during the Mexican
war. He commanded a regiment of
Mississippi Volunteers. These
troops were said to be the best
drilled, most orderly and the quiet
est of all the troops engaged in
the war. Davis and his men dar
ingly took the Fort, the speaker
told, and in the eeige he was
wounded in the foot. After peace
was signed, he returned home to
manage his plantation which he
had left when joining the army.
During the business meeting,
reports of various officers were
heard. Mrs. Joe Feagle reported
the Crosier Marker to be in good
repair and that the following ce
meteries had been cleaned: Can
non’s Creek, Quaker, Tranquil,
Gilder Creek, Floyd, Rutherford,
Pope, Shell, Dominick, Hents and
the Village cemetery behind
Boundary street school.
Mrs. Neely reported that a good
number of members Attended the
Lee-Jackson program at the high
school. She asked the secretary to
write a note of appreciation to
Mr. Maxcy Stone for taking Mr.
Pope’s place as speaker at the last
minute when Mr. Pope was unable
to attend.
After the chapter adjourned, de
licious refreshments were served
to the 20 members present

Mies Feis Will
Present Recital
Miss Carolyn Feis, of the New
berry College Department of Mu
sic, will present a piano recital
Monday evening, February 15, at
8 o’clock in Holland Hall, Her se
lections will include: The Italian
Concerto by J. S. Bach; Robert
Schumann’s Fantasy; a short col
lection of folk songs \>y Bela Bar-
tok; ami the Prokovief 3rd Sonata.
Miss Feis received a Bachelor
of Music 'Degree from Oberlin
College in Ohio and a Master’s De*
gree from the University of In
diana where she studied with- Dr.
Bela Bossormenyi-Nagy. Last
year, Mies Feie, a special music
teacher in the Des Moines, Iowa
school system, made several per
forming appearances for Friends
of the Music Association.
Good Attendance
At UDC Meeting
The February meeting of Dray
ton chapter was well attended.
Mrs. Ralph Baker led in the sa
lutes to the flags, and in the ab
sence of Mrs. H. L. Parr, the
Chaplain, conducted the Ritual,
Mrs. A. J. Briggs, Secretary,
gave very full minutes of the Jan
uary meeting, after which Mrs. J,
IS. Wiseman, the Historian, an
nounced that Mrs. Gordon Clark
son would have the subject for the
afternoon which was “So Much
with So Little—The Heroic Work
of the > Confederate Doctors.”
Mrs. Clarkson had gathered a
store of interesting information
concerning the unsanitary condi
tions under which these doctors
had to work in field hospitals,
many times on the battlefields; of
lack of medicines and especially
of anesthetics, operations having
to be performed without this aid;
the lack of instruments, in fact,
the lack pf everything needed. The
wonder fe that any of tne wounded
recovered, she said.
For the latter part of her talk,
Mrs. Clarkson read excerpts from
“A Confederate Surgeons Letters
to His Wife, by Dr. Spencer Glas
gow Welch.”
Mrs. Wiseman distributed the
new Year Books.
The president announced that
the portrait of Henry Timrod, a
gift from the South Carolina U.
D. C. to the state, would be unveil
ed in the Senate chamber in
March, the date to be announced
later. The ceremony will take
place in the Senate chamber and
Miss Juanita Hitt's Red Shirt
chorus has been invited to sing on
this occasion.
Mrs. Elmer Shealy told of the
interesting Lee-Jackson exercises
at the high school under the aus
pices of the Calvin Crosier chap
ter, at which she represented the
president of Drayton Rutherford
chapter.
In the absence of Mrs. Holland
Sligh, Mrs. T. B. Lester read
Items from the News Sheet, and
also reported cards sent to the tick
and shut-ins.

Mrs. L. G. McCullough reported
as satisfactory the collection of
1960 dues, also Magas ine sub
scriptions, and candy sold.
Mrs. Shealy reported meeetings
of two groups of the Children’s
chapter.
Mrs. S. C. Griffith gave as in
formation that the Civic League
would plant Paul Scarlet roses
around the railing at the Confed
erate monument under the
League’s beautification project* of
The chapter expressed deep appre
ciation for this offer from the
league.
Mrs. T. M. Fellers reported that
Mesdames Cannon Blease and R-
D. Wright and Mias Sallie Lee Cro
mer would be hostesses for the
March meeeting.
Miss Rosabel Thompson served
sandwiches, cheese straws, home
made fruit cake, and coffee. Mrs.
T. E. Davis, co-hostess, was one
the many flu sufferers. jr
