SIGNS OF CHRISTMAS
The appearance of holiday
decorations on streets and in
windows of stores and homes is
a sore sign, bat there are also
other ways to tell that Christ
mas is not too far away. Yon
can count the days until Christ
mas on your lingers when:
Department store clerks are
“extra” friendly and courteous.
Strangers begin to smile and
speak to you on the street.
Children never fail to say
“Sir” and “Ma’am.”
The bus driver sees you run
ning—and waits an extra min
ute.
The grouchy neighbor across
the street smiles and waves as
you go by.
Someone offers to help Mom
do the dishes.
You find yourself suddenly
feeling fine and looking at the
world through rose colored
glasses.

Mistletoe Facts
Mistletoe traditions are said to
have begun with the ancient
Druids, who attributed great pow
ers to the plant. It was supposed
to keep away witches and prevent
diseases, to encourage fertility and
good luck. Mistletoe means “all
heal.”
Animals and Christmas
. Possibly because animals have
always been associated with the
scene of the birth of the Child
Jesus, children in some parts of
France believe that animals are
given the power to speak at mid
night on Christmas Eve.
New Year Is
Time to Say
'Remember'
Watching the old year out and
the New Year in is an American
tradition. Some like to follow the
crowds to Times Square; others
prefer the atmosphere of a res
taurant or nite spot; and of those
who so desire the majority may
do it the easy way—relaxing in
their favorite chair and watch
ing TV.
No matter how the “watching”
and “waiting” is done, someone
Arill probably say, “I remember
when . ...” As certainly as we
all look for good things in the
year ahead, we’re sure to take
note of the fact that some im
portant event is slipping deeper
and deeper into the pages of his
tory.
Some oldtimers will remember,
for example, that the U. S. parcel
post system was inaugurated in
1913 and that six years later, in
1919, New Year’s Day was de
clared a legal holiday throughout
the country, with the exception
of Massachusetts and Washing
ton, D. C. Or, that the first cable
across the Pacific was completed
in 1903. Overseas, the USSR was
formed in 1923. Here at home, the
Social Security administration
was inaugurated in 1937. These
dates may be well remembered
because all of these things hap
pened on January 1.
While enjoying the luxury of
viewing Times Square activity
from the comfort of the living
room, through the medium of TV,
We might also note that the first
motion picture was shown to the
public some 66 years ago, in April
of 1894 . . . the Edison kinescope.
The first real motion picture, of
fered in 1906, was titled “The
Life of an American Fireman”
was without a plot. In 1905
“The Great Train Robbery” made
movie headlines and two years
later along came A1 Jolson as
“The Jazz Singer,” the first pic
ture with spoken sequence and
the first all-talk picture.
The Poinsettia
Here are some fingertip rec
ommendations for proper care
of the poinsettia, that popular
house plant of the Christmas
season:
1. Keep the plant in a sun
ny window, avoiding both
drafts and heat. A temperature
of 70 degrees Is best.
2. Examine the soil frequent
ly (at least twice a day) and
keep it moist. When the soil be
gins to dry out, apply enough
water to wet it to the bottom.
