It is a good thing to observe Christ
mas Day. The mere marking of times
and seasons, when men agree to stop
work and make merry together, is a
wise and wholesome custom. It helps
one to feel the supremacy of the com
mon life over the individual life.
Are you willing to stoop down and
consider the needs and the desires of
little children; to remember the weak
ness and loneliness of people who are
growing old; to stop^isking how much
your friends* love you and ask 3 our
self whether you love them enough;
to bear in mind the things that other
people have to bear on their hearts;
to make a grave for your ugly
thoughts and a garden for your kindly
feelings, with the gate open—are you
willing to do these things even for a
iayf Then you can keep Christmas.
Are you willing to believe that love
is the strongest thing in the world—
stronger than hate, stronger than
evil, stronger than death—and that
the blessed life which began in Beth
lehem some 1906 years ago is the
image and brightness of the Eternal
Love? Then you can keep Christmas.
And if you keep it for a day. why
not always?

CHRISTMAS SPIRIT
Traditionally, the prepara
tions for Christmas are quite
feverish. Preparing the deco
rations for the home and the
tree, the extra hours that go
into selecting and preparing
good things to eat, the some
times-perplexing problem of
choosing the right gifts, and
remembering everyone that
we should—all of this has be
come ^traditional.” And stUl,
an afterglow to aU the merri
ment, Christmas Day usually
ushers in comparative peace
and quiet, a time when in si
lent reflection, the majority of
us come face to face with the
true meanings of Christmas
and the spiritual blessings that
attend the season.
NATIVITY SCENE . . . This
gigantic Nativity Scene was
erected in front of a Chicago
plant, which manufactures the
displays for department stores
and display companies. You can
get an idea of the size of the
figures in this display by com
paring them with the children.
Holiday Custom
In Czechoslovakia, the Christ
mas tree is the center of much
attention during the holiday sea
son. The tree is decorated with
many candles, assorted candies,
nuts and fruits and is surrounded
with singing and dancing until the
New Year at which time the chil
dren eat the goodies before the
head of the household discards
the tree.
Greek Tradition
A traditional preparation in
Greece is “Christpsomo” or
“Bread of Christ.” Before bak
ing this holiday treat, the house
wife makes a hand print on the
surface of the dough and it is
said that the hand print is proof
of the birth of Christ.
IT’S STILL CHRISTMAS
In Spain they say, “El Natal.”
In Italy, it is ”11 Natal.”
Hollanders say “Krest-Misse! ”
In Germany, they refer to
“Weisnachten.”
In the English-speaking nations,
it is called, “Christmas.”
FOR PEACE ... A prayer
for peace is the theme often re
peated at Christmas. This is
the time of year when we are
all most aware of the need for
“Peace on Earth” and good
will to men.
