group of the Children of the Con
federacy met with Lila Summer
on November 26 with Ben Rook
and Helen Brown assisting.
Eleven members were present to
attend a movie about the War Be
tween the States, and afterwards
returned to the home of the host
ess for the business meeting and
a program.
Elected officers for the year
were Ben Rook, president; Lila
Summer, vice-pres.; Helen Brown,
secretary; Mary Kay Shannon,
treasurer; Mac Cobb, historian;
Jim McCaughrin, chaplain.
Helen Brown and Lila Summer
gave an interesting account of the
convention of the Children of the
Confederacy in Charleston last
August and also expressed their
hope that many from Newberry
would be able to attend the next
convention which will be held in
Houston, Texas in August 1960.
Delightful refreshments were
served by the hostesses and host.
GIRL SCOUTS TO
SELL COOKIES
Girl Scout Troop 7 met on No
vember 25. Final plans were
made for the Saturday cook-out.
Plans were also made for a cookie
sale to raise money for a trip to
Savannah for our troop next sum
mer. The sale will begin in about
a week. Our senior helpers, Beth
Atchison and Stephanie Yates,
taught the troop some new songs.

Miss Frances Derrick, 46, of
i*rosperity, died early Saturday

.Memorial Hospital. She had been
ill three months.
Miss Derrick was born and
Teared in Saluda County, a
•daughter of the late Jodie O. and
Ellie Holley Derrick. She made
her home in Prosperity for the
past 15 years where she was a
member of Grace Lutheran
Church. She was employed by
.Newberry Mills, Inc.

Frick of Columbia and Mrs. Wal
lace Bates of Joanna; and three
brothers, J. Haskell and Bennie

Funeral services were con
ducted at 3 p. m. Sunday from
Union Lutheran Church in Lex
ington County by Rev. Ben M.
Clark and Rev. J. L. Drafts. Bur
ial was in the church cemetery.
Camp Succumbs
In Greenwood
Jesse Pendleton Camp, 69, of
Newberry, died Friday at Self
Memorial Hospital in Greenwood
after two years of declining
health and a critical illness of
two weeks.
He was born at Sceney, Ga.
a son of the late James Oliver
and Louzanie Smith Camp. He
lived in Greenwood for many
years, operating a grocery store
on East Cambridge Avenue.
He was employed with the
railroad in Greenwood for 23
years and moved to Newberry
two years ago. He was a min
ister of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Survivors include one daugh
ter, three sons, 10 grandchildren,
a step-daughter, five sisters,
and three brothers.
His wife, the former Martha
Ridley Grant, died a number of
years ago.
Funeral services were held on
Sunday by Minister A. H. Val
entine. Burial was in Magnolia
Cemetery.
