PAGE FOUR THE NEWBERRY SUN, NEWBERRY, SOUTH CAROLINA LEGAL NOTICE NOTICE OF ELECTION Pursuant to a certificate and petition filed with the County Commissioners of Election for Newberry County, South Carolina, by the City of Newberry on Sep tember 19, 1959, the said certifi cate and petition now being on file in the Office of the Clerk of Court for Newberry County in Book 14 at page 37. This certifi cate and petition requests the or der of an election for annexation of the land described below to the City of Newberry. Pursuant to the provisions of Section 47-14 of the Code of Laws of South Carolina of 1952, an elec tion is ordered to be held on Oc tober 20, 1959, according to the laws governing general elections in South Carolina with the polls being opened at 8:00 A. M. and closed at 6:00 P. M. for the pur pose of determining whether the following described territory should be annexed to the City of Newbery, to wit: All that piece, parcel or tract of land situate in the State and County aforesaid, lying immed iately adjacent to the City Limits of the City of Newberry, S. C. and being described as follows: •Beginning at a point where Caldwell Stret intersects the City Limits of the City of Newberry and proceeding in a southeaster ly direction along said Caldwell Street to a point where the Ebe- nezer Road intersects with Cald well Street Extension; thence, in a southeasterly direction, 120’ on a line perpendicular to the said Ebenezer Road; thence, north easterly on a line parallel to the Ebenezer Road and at all times being an equal distance of 120’ from the said Ebernezer road to a point 120’ from where Ebenezer road intersects with Glenn Street; thence, along a line always 120’ equal distance and paralled, and running in a northerly and northwesterly direction to a point southeast of where Glenn Street intersects with Rivers Street; thence on a line northeasterly and parallel to said Rivers Street and also 120’ equal distance from said Rivers Street to a point intersect ing with Railroad Avenue; thence, in a northwesterly direction to the City Limits of the City of Newberry; thence, along the City Limits of the City of Newberry, to the point of the beginning. Prop erty more fully described by a sur vey made on September 9, 1959, and recorded in the Clerk of Courts office for Newberry Coun ty on September -24, 1959, in Plat Book P at page 126. Also, a copy of this plat is posted in the of fices of the City Clerk and Treas urer, Newberry, South Carolina. To vote in this election the vot er must be a qualified elector presenting a valid registration certificate bearing a date not ear lier than January 1, 1958, nor lat er than thirty (30) days prior to the election, and must be a resi dent of the City of Newberry, or the territory described in this an nexation election notice. The Managers bhall administer to each person offering to vote oath that he is qualified to vote at this election, according to the Constitution of this State, and that he has not voted during this election. The Managers have the power to fill a vacancy, and if none of the Managers attend, the citizens can appoint from among the qualified voters, the Managers, who, after being duly sworn, can conduct the election. At the close of the election the Managers and Clerks must pro ceed publicly to open the ballot box and count the ballots therein, and make a statement of the re sults for each annexation election, and sign the same. Within three days thereafter the Chairman of the Managers, or some one desig nated by the Managers, must de liver to the Commissioners of Election the poll list, the box con taining the ballots and written Consolidate... PHONE 982 Savings Bonds More Attractive Never before have United States Savings Bonds been so attractive to investors and small savers alike, Joe M. Roberts, chairman of the Newberry County Savings Bonds Committee, said today in commenting on the one-half per cent increase in interest rates on old and new Series E and H Sav ings Bonds. “Forty million people automati cally benefit from the recent leg islation passed by Congress,” Mr. Roberts said, “because that many hold outstanding bonds in the amount of $42.6 billion. For the first time, the hike in rates ap plies to old Series E and H Sav ings Bonds, as well as those being bought currently. So, it will be to the advantage of most bond owners to hold onto their old bonds, thus automatically receiv ing the benefit of the increase.” The new law does two things: (1) it provides that all Savings Bonds bought on and after June 1 draw 3 3-4 per cent interest when held to maturity, and (2) it in creases by at least one-half of one per cent the interest return on all outstanding E and H bonds, regardless of their age, for the period from June 1, 1959, to their maturity. In addition, the Treas ury has promised a 10 year exten sion privilege for all E Bonds, both old and new. “I cannot emphasize too strong ly the fact that evei^r person who owns an E or H bond benefits from the new rate, without having to do anything about it,” Mr. Rob erts continued. “I would therefore encourage the public to do two things: keep holding their old bonds, and keep on buying the new ones. This is the finest Sav ings Bonds package ever offered.” Smokey Bear Photo Contest COLUMBIA.—A Smokey Bear photo contest for children of ele mentary and junior high schools throughout the country will run from September 15, 1959 to Jan uary 31, 1960, according to State Forester Chas. H. Flory. Two thousand prizes will be awarded to winners in the “Help Smokey” photo contest, said Mr. Flory, who will serve as one of the judges. He commented that the contest should help Smokey Bear in his constant crusade to prevent man-caused forest fires, and should help make children more aware of the need for conserving our nat ural resources. The stratagem, which caused the surrender by Colonel Rugley, was devised by Colonel William Washington, kinsman of the commanding general. Army Still In Need Of Men The United States Army still needs men for the United States Air Defense Command, Sgt, Sun- die, local Army Recruiter, at Greenwood said. The United States Air Defense Command is the only branch of the Army in which a volunteer can actually choose the metropoli tan area where, he would like to be stationed, the sergeant said. After basic training, the volun teer is sent to his choice of over 23 metropolitan areas in the Unit ed States. There he will receive on-the-job guided missile or lec- tronics training in a surface to air guided missile unit designed to protect large cities from enemy attack, he said. According to Sgt. Sundie, the person makes three choices of area assignments. Then before he enlists he receives written con firmation of the metropolitan area to which he will go. Sgt. Sundie asked all interest ed persons to contact him at the Newberry Selective Service office on Tuesday or Friday of each week. The approximately 80 million licensed drivers in the U.
