Roche, Cadillac general manager and vice president of General Motors, said, “The newness of the 1960 Cadillac is emphasized by its handsome lines and elegant sim plicity of design. “In addition to the styling ad vances are important develop ments in mechanical operation, in cluding further progress in achievement of smoothness and quietness of performance and sig nificant developments in the» braking system.” For 1960, Cadillac is offering 13 models in three standard se ries and one custom series, the Eldorado Brougham. All models are basically unchanged in dim ensions over last year’s models. The wider and lower appearance of the new front grille is achieved by the addition of a fine horizontal bar between each row of jewel like ornaments and the elimina tion of the center bumper bar. At each end of the front bumper is a visored housing with two park ing and directional signal lamps. The new side view silhouette is achievec with the lower, more restrainec tail fin design which gives the ef fect of one long, sweeping line from the hood through the entire length of the car. The trim, classic lines which mark the 1960 Cadillac are bril liantly evident in the rear enc styling with the most distinctive lighting arrangement ever offeree by Cadillac. Just below the contoured tail- light lenses in the trailing edge of the fins are new vertical, oval, chrome bumper housings each con taining two circular lamps with concave lens. The lower lamp with a red refleptor lens serves as a taillight, stoplight, and direction al signal light operating in uni son with the taillight in the fin itself. The upper lamp is the back up light. The major engineering advance ment for 1960 involves the brakes. Increased rear brake cooling, pro vided by new finned and extended rear drums, makes possible the use of larger rear wheel brake cylinders. This provides better braking distribution between front and rear wheels. Another part of the brake story is a self-adjusting feature which automatically adjusts the brakes as needed when the car is operat ed in reverse gear. Finally, there is another Cad illac first — a vacuum-released parking brake. With the engine Town and Ato Be Presented The “Town and Atom” presen tation of the United States Atomic Energy Commission’s mobile ex hibit began a tour of South Caro lina September 21 with an initial stop at Greenville. The exhibit, a part of the At omic Energy Commission’s “At oms for Peace” program, is spon sored by the S. C. Junior Cham ber of Commerce and the Univer sity of South Carolina Extension Division. During its tour of South Caro lina the walk-through bus-type vehicle will stop in 28 towns over a period of approximately three months, and is scheduled for an appearance in Newberry Decem ber 9. Panels and models explain the basic principles of atomic energy and its uses and applications to the peacetime fields of medicine, power production, industry, agri culture and research. One of the mobile’s exhibits shows the way in which radio-ac tive materials and radiation are used in the field of medicine to aid both the physician and the patient, particularly in cancer treatment. The power reactors used in the submarine “Nautilus” and “Sea Wolf” are explained in the dis play showing atoms at work for industry. The spectator may op erate this animated panel to see how a nuclear reactor using atomic fuel can produce heat to convert water into steam which activates a turbine and generator to pro duce electricity. r The agriculture display explains the uses of radioactive elements and compounds in fertilizers and studies in plant growth and nutri tion and insecticides. The rays given off by radioactive sub stances have been used in genetic tests to produce new and differ ent types of plants—disease-resis tant wheat and corn, and thim- shelled peanuts.
