dale, Arkansas: I remember when
I was a child and my grand
mother came for her annual visit
at our house. I adored her and
followed her around like a sha
dow. She was here, there and
everywhere, no doubt, wondering
why she hadn’t been born twins
so she could take care of twice
as much.
We were always having to
chase a neighbor’s guineas out
of our chicken house. They not
only took the feed, they would
often chase the hens until they
died of exhaustion. We had a big
snowstorm one evening and Gran
ny had just told me, “It’s lying
and by morning there will be 8 or
10 inches of it.”
Then we heard a squawk from
the hen house and saw one of
them run across the lot pursued
by a guinea. Granny and I sta
tioned ourselves inside the house
and when the guinea returned,
we caught her. Then Granny
plucked all the feathers from that
bird and threw her out with the
admonition to go borne and stay
there.
Granny has been gone for many
years, but I haven’t forgotten how
ridiculous that guinea looked as
she wended her way homeward.
Incidentally, we never saw them
again!

When you are faced with an awkward room that seems to defy
all attempts to make it inviting, or when you simply become bored
with a monotone; of painted walls, try wallpaper in any of a
