P. M. Dennis’ Mother
Passes At Sumter
Mrs. Daisy Morris Dennis, 74,
mother of P. M. Dennis of New
berry, died Tuesday, June 23,
at the home of her daugh
ter, Mrs. Archie Thompson, in
Sumter, after an illness of two
months. She had been in declin
ing health five years.
Funeral was conducted ft-om
Olive Grove Free Will Baptist
Church near Turbeville on Thurs
day morning by Rev. D. S.
Smith, Rev. Ray Rumsey and Rev.
Onley Pope. Burial was in the
church cemetery.
Mrs. Dennis was a daughter
of the late Ellison Jane Green
Morris, well-known residents of
Turbeville, where she was born
and spent most of her lifetime
except for the past several win
ters in Miami, Fla.
She was an active member of
Olive Grove Church for the past
42 years. She was one of the
charter members of her church.
“Aunt Daisy,” as she was affec
tionately known by her host of
friends, had done very much to
help young ministers in her de
nomination further themselves in
the ministry.

Rites Tuesday
George A. Bowers, 61, of Rt. 1,
Prosperity, died suddenly Monday
morning at his residence after suf
fering a heart attack.
Mr. Bowers was born in the
Stoney Hill section of Newberry
County, a son of the late Jacob
Samuel and Mrs. Elibabeth B.
Bowers. He was a member of
Zion Methodist Church and W'as
a farmer all of his life. He was
a veteran of World War 1.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Nancy Jane Cook Bowers; two
sons, Oscar W. Bow r ers, and
Jacob Samuel Bowers, both of
Prosperity; a daughter, Mrs.
Reba Chapman of Prosperity;
three sisters, Mrs. J. C. Butler of
Silverstreet, Mrs. Arthur Boozer
Dawkins of Prosperity; a brother
Jacob M. .Bowers of Prosperity and
six grandchildren.
Funeral services were conduct
ed at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Zion
Methodist Church by the Rev.
Paul C. Scott and the Rev. Ray
P. Hook. Burial was in the church
cemetery.
Hughes Dies After
Lengthy Illness
Jessie J. Hughes, 67, of 1507
Hiller St., died Sunday night at
Newberry County Memorial Hos
pital after declining health for 10
years and an illness of a year.
He was born in Amory, Miss.,
a son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas
Hughes. He had made his home
in Newberry for the past 40
years, and was employed by the
Newberry Mills for more than 30
years. For eight years he was
night watchman for the Margaret
Hunter Park, until he retired. He
was a member of Mayer Memo
rial Lutheran Church.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Grace Eargle Hughes; 1 son
James Burton Hughes of San Ber-
nadino, Calif.; daughters, Mrs.
Myrtle Reagin of Middletown, Pa.,
Mrs. Mary Ruth Long, Mrs.
Louise Morris, Mrs. Ruby Mills,
and Mrs. Joyce Attaway all of
Newberry, and Mrs. Clara Hoi-

Rites Wednesday
Mrs. Lilia Mae Eargle Wicker,
39, died Monday at midnight at
her home near Newberry after an
illness of several months.
She was born in Newberry
County and was the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. C. M. H. Eargie.
Surviving are her husband, J.
Cecil Wicker; a son, Richard H.
Harmon; a daughter, Miss Cecilia
Ann Wicker; her father and step
mother; a step-daughter. Mis.
Patsy Morris; two grandchildren
and two step-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conduct
ed Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the
McSwain Funeral Home by the
Rev. John A. Sanders and the
Rev. H. A. Dunlap. Burial was in
Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. C. E, Eargle
Dies At Prosperity
Mrs. Laura Bickley Eargle, 79,
of Rt. 1, Chapin died Monday
night in a clinic at Prosperity af
ter an illness of four months.
She was born in Richland Coun
ty, a daughter of the late George
and Lou Swartz Bickley. She
lived near Chapin most of Her
life and was a member of St
Jacobs (Wateree) Lutheran
Church. Her husband was the late
Charles E. Eargle.
Surviving are a son, George H.
Eargle of Chapin; 4 daughters,
Mrs. Blanche Meetze and Mrs.
Dewey Stockman, both of Colum
bia, Mrs. Lloyd Shealy of Ches
ter and Mrs. Lawrence Lindler of
Chapin; a sister, Mrs. Ida Hicks
of Chapin; a brother, Pierce
Bickley of Chapin; 18 grandchil
dren and 2 step great-grandchil
dren.
Funeral services were conduct*
ed at 11 a. m. Wednesday at St.
Jacobs Lutheran Church by the
Rev.. Robert L. Swygert. Burial

Died Tuesday
Thomas J. Broom, 83, of Rt. 1,
Prosperity, died Tuesday morning
at a Newberry hospital after de
clining health of four years, and
an illness of two days.
He was born in Walker County,
Ga. and made his home in Green
wood for a number of years. He
had lived near Prosperity for the
past 12 years where he farmed.
Before he retired he was employ
ed by Newberry Mills, Inc.
Surviving are his wife Mrs.
Della Stewart Broom.
Funeral services will be con
ducted at 3 p.m. Friday at the
McSwain Funeral Home by the
Rev. L. O. Prosser, and the Rev.
Jack Dean. Burial will be hi
Springdale Cemetery.

Little Boys Training League
According to P. K. Fuller, re
creation director for Newberry’s
year-round recreation program,
only thirty boys between the ages
of 8 and 12 years have report
ed for the Little Boys Training
League at Speers Street School
grounds. He urged those interest
ed in learning to play baseball
come t out any afternoon at five
o’clock. All boys are given an
opportunity to play. Fundamentals
of baseball are taught by compe
tent personnel. If your boy is in
terested in baseball and did not
make one of the Little League
baseball teams, here is j^n oppor
tunity for him to acquire baseball
skill and have fun and fellowship
at the same time.
VFW Prep Teams
To date the prep league has
played two games,, both being
won by the VFW team over Pur
cell’s team, by scores of 4-1 and
10-6. '
Ball and Gloves Found
Two softball and two baseball
gloves have been turned in at
the Youth Center on Speers St.
