Have Institute
For Teachers
A $27,500 grant awarded to
the University of South Carolina
by the National Science Founda
tion will permit teachers in elem
entary grades to improve their
understanding and knowledge .of
science.
The grant will provide a six-
week institute for teachers which
will be administered by the USC
School of Education, of which
Dr. William W. Savage is dean.
Dr. H. W. Davis, head of. the De
partment of Chemistry, will be
the principal instructor and di
rector of the institute.
The purpose of the institute
for elementary teachers and in
structors of science is to increase
their understanding and knowl
edge of the subject in order to
improve their teaching ability
and to develop favorable student
attitudes towards science.
The bulk of the grant will go
to participants, and the remain
der for staff salaries and oper
ating costs. Those who enroll
must present a satisfactory grad
uate record examination or pass
the university entrance examina
tion.

on Fair Ave., adjacent to the
Kendall Company's Oakland plant,
of which Mr. Carpenter is man

C. Hood of Blythewood were mar
ried Friday, December 26, at 6:30
p. m. at the home of the officiat
ing minister, the Rev. Paul C.
Scott, pastor of the bride. Mr.
and Mrs. Quay Fellers, Mrs. L, J.
Fellers, and Judy Wise witnessed
the ceremony.
Mrs. Hood wore a blue dress,
winter white hat and gloves and a
white carnation corsage. She is
the daughter of the late Mr. and
Mrs. Green Mitchell. She attended
Chicora College and is now teach
ing in Blythewood.
After a short honeymoon the
couple will reside in Blythewood.

J. H. Bishop
John H. Bishop Sr., died in his
sleep Thursday morning at his
home on Rt. 8, Newberry. He had
been in declining health for the
past several years.
Mr. Bishop was born and rear
ed in Newberry County near
Whitmire. He was a membmer of
Smyrna Presbyterian Church. His
wife, Mrs. Lillie Merchant Bishop,
died in 1955.
Survivors include two sons,
John H. Jr., and James Bishop,
both of Newberry; one daughter,
Mrs. Gladys Hester of Newberry;
11 grandchildren and two great
grandchildren. He was the last
surviving member of his immed
iate family.
Funeral services were conduct
ed at 3 p. m. Friday from Mc-
Swain Funeral Home by Rev. Otis
Brown. Burial was in the Smyrna
Presbyterian Church cemetery.
