Christmas
Christmas is many things: snow and sleds; sunshine and palm
trees; a holiday from work; the light in children’s eyes; the,
laughter of friends; the joy of a feast; a time of sadness for
some who remember seasons past.
Christmas is even more: a time for prayer and worship; a time
of meditation about the story of the birth of a diild in a distant
land we are unlikely ever to see.
Christmas is a combination of all these things, but we feel
that everyone, regardless of religious beliefs, should celebrate
the occasion in some way or another manifesting love for our
fellowmen.
St. Francis expressed this Christmas spirit in his prayer: "l
may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be under
stood, as to understand; to be loved, as to love. For it is in giving
that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; it is in
dying that we are bom to eternal life.”
With these thoughts in mind, let us take the time to give
thanks unto Him for His many blessings; let us reaffirm our
faith; let us ask for His guidance.
As individuals, and as a nation, let us on Christmas day pray
for the less fortunate people of the world that they may find
new hope; let us pray for peace and that the nations of the earth
may dwell in harmony.
Pray that we may find this Christmas new vision, courage
and inspiration to face each tomorrow.
Henry Van Dyke wrote inspiringly on keeping Christmas:
"It is a good thing to observe Christmas Day. The mere mark
ing of times and seasons, when men agree to stop work and
make merry together is a wise and wholesome custom. It helps
one to feel the supremacy of the common life over the indi
vidual life.
"Are you willing to stoop down and consider the needs and
desires of little children; to remember the weakness and lone
liness of people who are growing old; to stop asking how much
your friends love you and ask yourself whether you love them
enough; to bear in mind the things that other people have to
bear on their hearts; to make a grave for your ugly thoughts
and a garden for your kindly feelings, with the gate open-
are you willing to do these things even for a day? Then you
can keep Christmas.
"Are you willing to believe that love is the strongest thing
in the world—stronger than hate, stronger than evil, stronger
than death—and that the blessed life which began in Bethlehem
some 1900 years ago is the image and brightness of the Eternal
Love? Then you can keep Christmas. And if you keep it for a
day, why not always?”
