Contrary to some beliet, the New Year doesn’t explode around the
world in unison with the shouts of the merry throng in Times Square.
Actually, by the time the United States rings its bells and chimes
to greet 1959, the year will be many hours old in other parts of the
world.
The New Year begins at the starting point of time—the Admiralty’s
date line, near the Chatham Islands in New Zealand. From this point
the line curves east and west of the 180th meri^an in such a way that
it lies always in the ocean.
At 12:01, January 1, in the islands, it ts still December 31 in New
York and London. Yet, once it leaves the islands, the New Year moves
like a jet—to Australia, Asia, Africa. Europe and most of South Amer
ica before reaching American shores at Maine. It takes three more
hours to get to California. Alaska, the 49th State to enter the Union
is also the last to welcome in the New Year, some two hours later than
California.
For most Americans watching their TV sets this season, the New
Year will begin with the roar of the crowds along Times Square. T
will make little difference oat the year is eight hours old in Moscov
or two hours old in Buenos Aires.
