YOUNG, Correspondent The November meeting of the Iris Garden Club was held Wed nesday afternoon with Mrs. Otis Shealy. Mrs. B. D. Hawkins pre sided in the absence of the presi dent, Mrs. Tommy Harmon. Mrs. Charles Whittle, the guest speaker, whose .husband was in the army, gave an interesting dis cussion of the European and As iatic countries she had visited. She illustrated her talk with slides. Mrs. W. E. Martin gave glean ings. Mrs. Martin was the winner in a turkey contest. Mrs. Mosby Ruff won the door prize. The hostess served a salad plate with coffee. Mrs. Robert W. Pugh was hos tess to The Literary Sorosis Fri day afternoon. Mrs. C. E. Hendrix of Estill, a former member of the club, was a guest. All members were present. Mrs. D. H. Hamm Jr., program leader, introduced Mrs. W. P. Wright of Newberry who gave an interesting talk—“Cultural As pects of My Travels in Japan.” Mrs. Wright spent three years in Japan with her husband Col. Wright, and took many slides which she used to illustrate her talk. During the social hour the hos tess assisted by her daughter, Mrs. Ernest Price of Winston-Sa lem, N. C., served a delectable plate, cake and coffee. Mrs. Cole Wessinger was hos tess to the Crepe Myrtle Garden Club Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Elbert Shealy, program leader, presented her daughter, Mrs. Ja cob Amick, who gave the history and vivid descriptions of South -Carolina Gardens. Mrs. Wilbur Wessinger gave household hints. During the social hour the hos tess served a salad plate with coffee. Weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. R. McDonald were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lee Wimmer and their children, Kathy and Bill of Rock Hill, Mr. and Mi's. W. D. Springs and chi^fren, Anthony and Karen of Columbia. With the Mc Donalds Sunday were Miss Patri cia Cotney and Mr. and Mrs. S. W\ Shealy of Prosperity. Mrs. P. C. Singley accompanied by Mrs. George Clements, spent Saturday in Columbia. Mrs. Sing- ley went to see her great grand daughter, Lisa Ellen Wise, daugh ter of Lt. and Mrs. F. C. Wise Jr. Mrs. Vernon Carlton Sr., of Newberry and Mrs. H. E. Counts Sr. and Mrs. J. L. Counts, spent Sunday in Savannah with Miss Martha Counts and Vernon Carl ton Jr. Mrs. Ernest Price and her two children, Robin and Rene of Win ston-Salem, N. C., who have been visiting her mother, Mrs. Robert W. Pugh, left Monday for Deca tur, Ga., to visit Mrs. Price’s sis ter, Mrs. Carl Russell Caughman and family. Mr. and Mrs. Heyward Shealy of Aiken spent the weekend with Mrs. Shealy’s father, D. A. Bed- enbaugh and family. Mrs. Lenora C. Wheeler of Lan caster, visited friends in Prosper ity Saturday morning. She was en route to visit her son, Jake Wheeler and family in Newberry. Mr. and Mrs. Birge Wise and their two children, Mary Ellen and Allen, of Columbia, were supper guests Sunday night of Mrs. J. Frank Browne. Mr. and Mrs. Hunter Fellers spent Sunday in Spartanburg. Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Hendrix of Estill, A-3c Gene Hendrix of Es till and Orlando, Fla., spent the weekend with the A. R. Mrs. Clary Dies At Fort Lawn Mrs. Anna Swittenberg Clary, 84, of Fort Lawn died Saturday morning at her home. Funeral services were conduct ed at 3 p.m. Monday from the chapel of Bass Funeral Home by Rev. E. L. Larsen, Rev. R. E. Seignious and Rev. E.E. Glenn. Burial was in Grandview Memo rial Park. Mrs. Clary was born and rear ed in Newberry County, the daughter of the late George W. and Eugenia Shealy Swittenburg. She was twice married, first to Sam Crouch of Newberry County. Her second marriage was to the late Walter F. Clary. Mrs. Clary lived in Fort Lawn since 1929 and she was very act ive in her community. She was honored by her community for her faithful and loyal services several months ago. She was a member of the Luth eran Church of the Redeemer of Newberry. Survivors include two sons, Harry Thomas Crouch of Ruther- fordton and William S. Clary of Fort Lawn; two step-daughters, Miss Minnie Clary of Fort Lawn and Miss Cliobelle Clary of Ma con, Ga., one step-son, James W. Clary of Clinton; four sisters, Mrs. Ben T. Buzhardt, Mrs. George C. Hipp, and Dr. Mamie Summer, all of Newberry and Mrs. L. L. Hunter of Spartanburg, and one grandson, William T. Clary of Marietta, Ga. C. S. Bedenbaugh Died Tuesday Charlie S. Bedenbaugh, 66, re sident of Rt. Two, Prosperity, died Tuesday night at the New’- berry County Memorial Hospital. Civil Service Needs Scientists The Fifth U. S. She had been in ill health for a number of years, but was seriously ill for the last few weeks. George Everett Morgan of Rt. 4 announce the birth of a seven pound, 11 ounce son, Ronald Lee, on November 9 at the local hospital. Eargle of Parr, J. C. Eargle of Columbia, Elon Eargle of Poma- ria; five daughterSj Mrs. W. D. Moreland of Peak, Mrs. Louise Kay of Columbia, Mrs. J. O. Counts and Mrs. N. F. Summer, both of Little Mountain, Mrs. J. K. Shell of Peak; 12 grandchil dren and 16 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday from St. John’s Lu theran Church by Rev. Alvin Ful mer and Rev. C. L. Richardson. Burial was' in the church ceme tery. He had been in declining health for the past 14 years and serious for the past week. Mr. Bedenbaugh was born and reared in the St. Lukes Section of Newberry County, a son of the late George Pettus and Mrs. Sus anna Nichols Bedenbaugh. He was a member of St. Lukes Lutheran Church and operated a farm as long as his health permitted. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Gertrude Chapman Bedenbaugh; two sons, Roy Bedenbaugh of Kin- ards and Hugh Bedenbaugh of Greenwood; two daughters Mrs. Howard Shealy of Prosperity and Mrs. Robert Stuck of Pomaria; five sisters, Mrs. Gary Fulmer aid Mrs. Jim Miller both of New berry, Mrs. Forest Amick and Mrs. Clarence Riser, both of Pros perity, and Mrs. Lindsay Smith of of Kinards; four brothers, May- bank, Jones, Birdge and Ira Be denbaugh, all of Prosperity; and eight grandchildren. -One son, Car- roll Bedenbaugh was killed in ser vice of his country in 1945. , Funeral services were conduct ed at 3 p.m. Thursday from St. Lukes Lutheran Church by Dr. Thomas F.
