We have lamented that Capitol has made him another Presley when he had been such a good country and western singer . . . Now Capitol has ‘given him a chance to wax a country and west ern ballad and critics are surprised at the expert way he handles him self . . . Tommy is absolutely great in his latest disc, “I Love You Because” . . . We wore out the waxing just reviewing it as it played again and again and again , . . something we never did with any of his rock ’n roll numbers. This is the Tommy Sands he should be and whether the side sells or not we hope Capitol will continue to give him music . . . In fact, it might not be a bad idea for them to dig out some old Eddy Arnold hits such as “Bouquet of Roses” . . . Tommy always want ed to be another Eddy Arnold and the music world is ready for one . . . but it’s loaded with kids who can sing rock ’n roll . . . Try “I Love You Because,” compare it with the flip side, “Blue Ribbon Baby” and you’ll see what we mean. PLATTER CHATTER MERCURY: — The Diamonds get serious and tarn oat a good disk in their latest effort, “Kathy- 0,” a haunting, folk-song type of thing . . . Wonderful change for the boys and for music in general ... It probably won’t do much because “it doesn’t have a beat” but it’s worth buying just to soothe ruffled nerves after a rock ses sion . . . Real smooth and per sonally, we think its the best the group has ever done . . . Flip side has a light ditty called “Happy Years.” CAPITOL:—Dean Martin’s lat est makes three hits in a row for the low-pressure singer . . . It’s “Volare” and a whale of a num ber it is . . . Should go big . . . “Outta My Mind” is the reverse. SELF PORTRAIT . . . Staring at mirror before him, actor Zero Mostel finishes a self-por trait In his New York studio. Mostel was formerly a night club comic. i'MSy BY HELEN HALE Save Where Your Savings Are Insured A BUDGET-FITTED HOME LOAN GET THE FACTS TODAY T F YOU want to cut nice even slices of meat from a roast, tomatoes or large fruit such as melon, use a sharp, saw-tooth edged knife.
