William P. Lathrop
William Pinkney Lathrop, 73,
■died at 11:45 Tuesday night at his
residence on the Hartford Road
near Newberry. He had been in
declining health for the past sev
eral years but his death was unex
pected.
Mr. Lathrop was born and
reared in Newberry a son of the
late George and Mrs. Rhoda Mer
chant Lathrop. He had spent most
of his life in the Hartford section
on Rt. 4, where he operated a
farm and was a member of Ebe-
neezer Methodist Church, where
he was a former member of the
Board of Stewards. He was a
member of the Hartford Grange.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs.
Maggie Boozer Lathrop; four
.sons; William K. and George Ray
both of Pomaria, R. Aiken Lath
rop of Johnston and Arthur
Woodrow Lathrop of Newberry;
one sister, Mrs. Bessie Mills, of
Newberry and 15 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be con
ducted at 4 p. m. Thursday (to
day) from the Ebenezer Metho
dist Church by his pastor, the Rev.
C.’ B. Word, the Rev. C. W. Brock-
well and Rev. J. L. Drafts. Inter
ment will be in the church ceme
tery.

Allen Smoak, son of Mr. and Mrs.
David Smoak of Denmark. The

ing the double ring ceremony.
Mrs. Harold R. Bauer Jr. of Co
lumbia was matron of honor and
Miss Bennetta Clary, sister of the
bride was maid of honor. Among
the bridesmaids was Miss Sarah
Elizabeth Clary, sister of the
bride. Earl Hagood Bergen, cous
in of the bride, of Newberry, was
ringbearer.
Mrs. Smoak finished Cameron
High School and Furman Univer
sity. This past year she taught
eighth grade science at Brook-
land-Cayce Junior High and this
fall will be a member of the Den-
mark-Olar school faculty.
Mr. Smoak was a graduate of
Denmark high school and for four
years has been an employee of
American Telephone and Tele
graph of Denmark.

Capt. Dalton O. Carpenter, son
of D. O. Carpenter of 2804 Fair
Ave., was among those who re
ceived diplomas at graduation
ceremonies for the regular class
at the U. S. Army Command and
General Staff College, Fort Leav
enworth, Kansas, on Friday, June
20. The colorful ceremony was
held on the Main Parade at the
post.
Mrs. Sydney Carter and son,
Syd, are spending the summer
with Mrs. Carter’s parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Richard Baker on Wal
nut St. while Mr. Carter is at
tending summer school in Michi
gan.
Mrs. I. Kaplan is spending a
month with relatives in Atlanta,
Savannah and Augusta, Ga., while
Mr. Kaplan is on a tour of Israel
and other countries.
