Armed Forces
Day Saturday
Armed Forces D^y will be ob
served in Newberry Saturday,
May 17th, and merchants are ask
ed to display their flags on this
day, according to Lt. Emerson f).
Jones, Armed Forces Day chair
man in Newberry.
Lt. Jones stated that there will
be no display of equipment on the
square this year as in the past;
how T ever, there will be two flights
of aircraft over Newberry during
the day as part of the observance.
One flight from Sumter will arrive
over Newberry at 9:51 a. m.; an
other flight, originating in At
lanta, is due over Newberry at
2:14 p. m.
Mayor Ernest H. Layton has
issued the following proclamation:
Whereas, the Armed Forces of
the United States, both active and
reserve components, are the
means whereby our way of life
and our freedoms are protected;
and
Whereas, the President of the
United States has proclaimed
Saturday, May 17, 1958 as Arm
ed Forces Day, and has called up
on the citizens of the United
States to devote this day to pay
ing of special tribute to our Arm
ed Forces as the protectors and
defenders of our country;
Now, Therefore, I, Ernest H.
Layton, Mayor of the City of
Newberry, do likewise proclaim
Saturday, May 17, 1958 as Armed
Forces Day, and call upon my fel
low citizens to display the flag of
the United States of America, and
to observe this day by familiariz
ing themselves w r ith the achieve
ments of our Armed Forces, and
to honor and recognize these Arm
ed Forces by attending and par

HAS SURGERY
AT ORANGEBURG
J. T. McCrackin was admitted to
the Orangeburg Hospital last
Tuesday where he underwent sur
gery on Wednesday. He is re
ported to be improving'nicely.
