\ PAGE FOUR THE NEWBERRY SUN THURSDAY, MAY 8, 1958 Opportunities For Young Men Sergeant Corbitt, local recruit er for the United States army, announced yesterday that young men with a keen eye on the fu ture, can now take advantage of unlimited opportunities to obtain fine training in the fields of elec tronics and guided missiles by qualifying for the U. S. Army Defense Command. These training courses give an understanding of electricity, el ectronics, radar, electric compu ters, hydraulics, and other mech anical and nonmechanical means through vhich the army’s air borne missies seek out and des troy their targets, the Sergeant pointed out. “Not only will one have the op portunity to train in electronics and guided missies—the great career fields of the future”, the Sergeant remarked, “but,, whe ther it be the technical or opera tional phase of the command, one will receive training that money can’t buy.” Men desiring information about this service may contact Serg eant Corbitt at the local Draft. Board. G. I. Loans Are Available Again Federal funds are now avail able for loans to veterans who wish to purchase homes or im prove existing homes in rural South Carolina, Senator Strom Thurmond has annunced. This development results from the renewal of the Veterans Direct Loan Program, which was sched uled to expire in June of this year but was extended for anoth er two years by a general housing bill recently enacted by Congress. It is be lieved that almost all of the vet erans on the waiting list will be provided for by this allotment. Additional funds, already appro priated, will be allotted later to continue the program through the next two years. Loans are available for the pur chase of homes or for the altera tion, repair and improvement of homes already owmed by veterans. They bear interest at the rate of 4 3-4 per cent per annum. Kelly Spea ks At Prosperity PTA Philip T. Kelly Jr., alumni sec retary and dean of men at New berry College, was guest speaker at the April meeting of the Pros perity Parent-Teacher Associa tion. He used as his subject “Paren tal Authority.” He stated at the beginning that he hoped he would step on some of the mem bers toes or otherwise his talk would be of no value. Mr. Kelly brought out that boys and girls go to college now main ly for its atmosphere, to gain a cultural background, and to have a good time. For the group’s thinking she used the twelfth verse of the nineteenth Psalm. She also read the very inspiring poem “The Master Is Coming”. A Defense film was shown to bring out what should be done in case of atomic radiation in the atmosphere. ROSS GEORGE County Agents Weekly News Aromatic Tobacco Growers Watch Out for Blue Mold In Plant Beds In visiting our Aromatic tobac co growers the past week we find most of the plant beds are doing well. Most growers have done a good job of plant bed manage ment and have good stands of plants. Weather conditions lately have been ideal for blue mold de velopment. Blue mold is a fungus disease that attacks young to bacco seedlings and quickly kills the plants. Blue mold develops readily during mild nights and successive cloudy days such as we’ve had lately. Aromatic tobacco is becoming an important crop in Newberry County. Cali us if you need assist ance with any problem in growing your tobacco crop this year. Guernsey Sale We hear that a lot of good quality animals will be in thf* Annual S. C. Guernsey Spring Sale at the State Fairgrounds in Columbia next Tuesday, May 13. There will be a total of 50 head of registered Guernseys including 8 cows and 36 bred heifers. Of special interest is that 6 open heifers that will be in this sale for 4-H club and FFA mem bers only to bid on. The S. C. Guernsey Cattle Club will also pay the breeding fee to insure that these heifers will 'fee bred to top quality bulls. Sounds like a good chance to buy a good heifer for a club project and to have a real top heifer to show at the fair this fall. Local consigners *to the state sale are J. F. Hawkins, I. M. Smith and C. P. Teague and Sons. Working Wet Soils Harmful J any old timers tell us they can’t remember many years it’s stayed wet this late in the spring. There have been mighty few days since the first of the year it would do to plow. Planting of all crops, gardens and many other farm jobs have been delayed con siderably due * to continued wet weather. Just a reminder that if you are impatient to get going, work ing wet soils can cause harmful effects for several years. A farmer is really not satisfied when he puts in a crop in the mud. Also waiting a day or two might make all the difference between making a good crop or a poor one. You Might Be Interested Peach Leaf fcurl: We’ve had several calls lately about what to do about peach leaf curl on peach trees. Unfortunately there’s not much that can be done at this time of year to prevent this di sease that cause peach leaves to curl and appear deformed. Dor mant sprays of Bordeaux or lime sulfur in December or January helps prevent this condition. Best thing to do is to follow the regu lar peach spray schedule for the remainder of this season and plan to spray for it next winter. Ant Control in Yards and L^iwns Several calls lately indicate a few folks are being pestered by numerous ant hills in their yards and lawn. 4 ozs. of 45 £ *> Chlor- dane mixed in 100 gallons of water and drench entire yard wilt usually give good ant control. County Supply Bill Is Passed The supply bill for Newberry County was passed by the legis lature and signed by the govern or on April 25. It provides for $321,363.60 to be expended by the county during the fiscal year July 1, 1958 to June 30, 1959. According to Senator R. Aubrey Harley, there are very few changes in this year’s supply bill. There have been no salary in creases, and changes were minor ones, the Senator said.
