Last Rites Here
GREENWOOD. — Mrs. Eunice
Slight Glasgow, 83, 120 E. Cres-
well Ave., died Monday at 5 p.m.
at Self Memorial Hospital where
^he had been a patient for sev
eral weeks.
She was born in Newberry
County Jan. 28, 1875, a daughter
of the late Albert C. Sligh and
31rs. Amelia Boozer, Sligh, both
of well known Newberry County
families.
Mrs. Glasgow had made her
home in Greenwood since 1917.
Prior to that she made her home
in Jalapa in Newberry County.
She was a member of South
Main Street Baptist Church where
she had worked in the cradle
roll department for a number of
years.
Surviving are 5 daughters, Mrs.
James Smith Sr. of Newberry,
Mrs. Ed R. Haynie of Greenville,
Mrs. Mary Lou Major of Green
wood, Mrs. Gene Hodge and Mrs.
J. P. Landham of Sumter; 4 sons,
Marcus Glasgow of Salisbury, N.C.,
George C. Glasgow of Greenville,
Frank Glasgow and Spencer Glas-
jgow, both of Greenwood; 12 grand
children and 7 great-grandchild
ren; 4 sisters, Mrs. Bessie Fer
guson of Whitmire, Mrs. Neal
Blair of Boone, N.C., Mrs. Thomas
Lipscomb of Spartanburg, Mrs.
Ted Arledge of Ashville, N.C.;
5 brothers, Albert Sligh of Whit
mire, Claude Sligh of Greenwood,
Hubert Sligh of Ninety Six, Nor
man Sligh of Greenwood, and
Chevis Sligh of Ninety Six.
Her husband, George C. Glas
gow, died in 1916.
Funeral services were con
ducted from South Main Street
Baptist Church Wednesday at 11
a.m. by Dr. G. H. Moore and the
Rev. James W. Buckingham. In
terment followed in Rosement
Cemetery in Newberry.
Braswell Is
Promoted
HANAU, Germany (AHTNC)—
Wiliam E. Braswell, son of Mr.
and Mrs. John L. Braswell, Rt. 3,
Newberry, recently was promoted
to specialist third class in Ger
many where he is a member of the
8th Ordnance Battalion.
Specialist Braswell, a person
nel specialist in the batalion’s
507th Company, entered the Army
in January 1957 and received basic
training at Fort Jackson. He ar
rived in Europe in June 1957.
A 1952 graduate of Bush River
High School, the 24-year-old sol
dier attended Newberry College.
Exchange Club
’Cue April 9
The Exchange Club of Newberry
will sponsor a chicken barbecue
on April 9 at the Junior High
School cafeteria. Hours will be
from 5:00 until 7:30 p. m. Pro
ceeds will be used to finance Little
Boys Baseball and other youth
activities of the Exchange Club.
The ’cue will be cooked by Gene
Shealy and Red Franklin. Price
for adult tickets, $1.50; children,
75c. Tickets may be secured from
any member of the Exchange Club.

In Community
Development

Chappells Rates High In
Community Development
We wish to commend very high
ly all the folks in Chappells for
their efforts in Community De
velopment. Although they just
started last year, their worthwhile
efforts won them recognition in
the State Community Development
Contest. With sixty-five com
munities enrolled in the Piedmont
District in 1957 Chappells placed
sixth.
Just goes \o show what folks
can do when they work together to
accomplish something. Chappells
folks point with pride to their
Community Center. They have de
voted much effort to “fixing-up”
their Community Center so it can
now be used for many of their
meetings and other community ac
tivities.
Officers of the Chappells Club
are: Jake Arant, President; Billy
Dipner, Vice President; Miss Lil
lie Mae Workman, Secretary and
Francis Scurry, Treasurer. Direc
tors are Earl Boazman, T. H. Neel
and L. E. Werts. Our congratula
tions to all the Chappells folks for
their excellent rating their first
year in Community Development.
May 1st is the deadline for en
rolling in the 1958 S. C. Com
munity Development Contest. State
Awards for this year will be $350
first place and $300 second place.
District Awards will be from $260
for first place down to $50 for 5th
place.
We know the Chappells Club will
be in there pitching to win in the
contest this year. Aren't there
more communities in Newberry
County interested in this worth
while program? We’ll be glad to
help if there are.

Clifford Boinest Metts Sr., Rt.
12, Workhouse Road, Knoxville,
Tenn., died early Friday morning
at a Knoxville hospital.
Born in Newberry County, he
was the son of the late Capt. W.
G. and Rebecca Metts of Newber
ry. A Lutheran, he was a mem
ber of Carpenters Local 50 and for

Service Monday
Miss Lillian Ernestine Beden
baugh, 51, died late Saturday af
ternoon at Newberry County Me
morial Hospital. She had been in
ill health for a year and seriously
ill the past few days.
Miss Bedenbaugh was born
and reared in Newberry and was
the daughter of the late William
Pierce and Mrs. Annie Fayette
Bedenbaugh. After her mother’s
death, she had made her home with
her sisters.
She is survived by four sisters,
Mrs. L. J. Howard, Batesburg;
Mrs. J. S. Schumpert, Williston;
Mrs. Perry O. Wicker and Mrs. J.
C. Neel, both of Newberry, and
one brother, Frank B. Bedenbaugh,
Augusta, Ga.
Funeral services were held Mon
day at, 3 p. m. from McSwain Fun
eral Home with Rev. Paul E. Mon
roe conducting the service. Burial
was in Rosemont Cemetery.
Nephews were pallbearers and
nieces assisted with the flowers.
Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Berry and
children are making their home at
912 McKibben St. in a trailer on
the lot where the home of Miss
Jessie Hornsby formerly stood.
