We Americans don’t like to think that and we are prone to doubt it. But is it true? We need not be alarmists; nor need we become hysterical, but we would be wise to ascertain the truth. The greatest being who ever visited the earth said “You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.” Of course He spoke of spiritual truth, but truth even in earthly affairs is the surest basis of life and progress. I’ve read quite a stimulating article on Russia’s achieve ments in metallurgy. “Soviet scientists are making spectacular gains in metals research and development, says several U. S. metallurgists who have visited the U.S.S.R. and looked into their labs. Many of these American metal men, attending meetings of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Pet roleum Engineers say this nation must speed its metals re search of it is to maintain its present slim lead in the de velopment of better materials for such items as jet engines, missiles and rocket motors. ‘The next five years will tell the story,’ asserts Dr. John P. Nielsen, head of the department of metallurgy at New York University and organizer of several scientific tours through the Soviet Union. ‘We might well spend the years after that trying to catch up with Russian technology, he cautions. Y. . they mean to pass us.’ Adds Nicholas Grant, metallurgy professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology: ‘There's no doubt about it, they’re spending more time and effort on metal research and development than we are.' U. S. scientists insist that Russian military hardware so « far exhibited shows no evidence of using more advanced metals than are used in this country’s Wjeapons. For ex ample, alloys known to be used in one of the Reds' most powerful jet engines also are being used by our own Air Force. But what worries American metal experts are the ad vances their Russian counterparts appear to be making in basic laboratory understanding of why metals behave as they do. For one thing, they argue, Russian researchers are using new instruments, such as powerful metal microscopes, to probe behind a metal’s behavior at extreme low and high temperatures and under a variety of stresses. Some of these instruments are more advanced than any the U. S. has. The Russians, they claim, have shown an amazing ability to speed basic research findings into actual production. ' American rpetal experts emphasize, of course, that any Russian lead in metallurgical research could be equalled if the U. S. greatly steps up efforts in this science in the next few years. If either Russia or the U. S. should turn up an advanced alloy well ahead of the other, it would give that nation a clear advantage in aircraft and rocket weaponry, say many metallurgists. One of the things holding back develop ment of higher speed and more reliable engines is the lack of materials able to stand up under temperatures of 1,600 to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Jet engines built of materials that could withstand tem peratures higher than today’s limit of about 1,600 degrees would be able to produce more thrust. Raising the working temperature of these engines by 400 to 600 degrees would boost the speed limits of operational aircraft to ap much as 2,600 miles an hour, compared to today’s 1,400-mile-an- hour limit. Alloys now available to the U. S. and Russia are made of almost identical materials, scientists note. Such metals as nickel, chromium, vanadium and molybdenum are used widely in alloys that must meet severe tests. Some alloys also include the expensive metals tantalum and columbium. The secret to development of new superior alloys lies in finding the right combination of these metals and in de veloping methods to fabricate and machine them to desired shapes and sizes. Russian researchers, say U. S. metallurgists are ad vanced in testing boron as a basic ingredient for super al loys. Metallurgists believe that if boron’s brittleness can be mastered, alloys made of this material will be able to stand temperatures up to 3,000 degrees. Soviet scientists also are said to be pushing development of ‘cermets’ more rap idly than the U. S. These are metallic-ceramic combinations able to stand up under 2,600-degree heat. Materials such as these would almost certainly have to be used in jet and rocket engines propelling aircraft and mis siles faster than 2,500 miles an hour. In addition, there is evidence that Red researchers are making faster headway than this country’s metallurgists in the field of powder metallurgy. This is the pressing of metallic powder under heat and pressure into fabricated products. Berrylium, for example, probably is a metal best molded this way. On a strength-to-weight raio it is three times stronger than steel and theoretically could reduce aircraft weights by as much as 50 per cent. U. S. scientists who have visited Russia are impressed by the importance attached to metallurgical education in Russia. About 4,500 metallurgists were graduated last year from top Russian metal schools, such as the Moscow Steel Institute and the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute. In com parison, the U. S. produced only 800 graduates in metallurgy at such schools at M.I.T., California Institute of Technol ogy, Carnegie Institute of Technology and N.Y.U. To en courage better students, Soviet educators provide a minimum stipend of $40 monthly, about half the average Russian wage earner’s salary. Thus far, Russian pronouncements on metallurgical gains have been confined mainly to steel production figures. These are impressive in themselves, say American steelmen. Soviet steel output last year is estimated at about 56 million tons, nearly double the amount turned out in as recent a year as 1950. U.S. steel output last year totaled 113 million tons, up from 97 million tons in 1950. Russian production people have said they are aiming to produce 135 million tons by 1975. T don’t think we can laugh at their ability to produce what they say they will’, warns Dennis J. Carney, product ion superintendent of the Duquesne (Pa.) Works of U.S. Steel Corp. He adds: ‘They’ve just about met their product ion quotas in the past; there’s no reason they can’t double their production again in 15 years’. Although U.S. metals research may already lag behind Soviet efforts, there has been a ‘definite stepping-up of metals research’ in this country, says Dr. Walter R. Hibbard, manager of alloy studies at General Electric Co. One piece of evidence; The number of scientific papers on metallurgy has jumved 10 percent in the U.S. in the past five years, according to Dr. Hibbard, who also is president of the Met allurgical Society of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers” Quoting from the Wall Street Journal. Russian education may be one-sided; it may be unsuitable for a free country, but we know that might has upset this world in every age, so that someone must be fore-armed because fore-warned. In the crash of war we can’t afford to have our men slaughtered as were the British or Canadians at Kemmel Hill in the First World War, when the Germans sprung gas on the unprepared troops. The Russians may conscript men for laboratory work if they wish to do so. We must prove that a despotic nation cannot destroy civilization. It is not encouraging, naturally, when we have bickering in the Armed Services. We Americans are disposed to be argumentative, even disputatious, perhaps to our disadvan tage at times. It is part of our freedom that every man may talk, but if we talked only when we knew what we are talk ing about we might save time. In the First World War Secretary of War Baker was in favor of the Browning rifle against quite a lot of opinion, both military and civilian. I don’t know who was right, but we had a terrific war of words, I recall; Some Senator, like Senator Kefauver, is quick to raise a point, as did the Senator in his effort to have Power ad vertising restricted. We have too much politics, though that is part and varcel of a so-called democratic government. It probably is better than the secrecy practiced in Russia but is of doubtful wisdom, frequently. It is a dangerous trend we have today toward Socialism. We may not live to see the full development of the peril but we are moving toward a kind of government that Wash ington and Jefferson would be ashamed of. PROSPERITY NEWS The Prosperity Cub Scouts en joyed a banquet Thursday evening, February 27, in the recreation hall of Wightman Methodist Church. The families of the Scouts were also invited. About 80 enjoyed this delightful affair. The mothers of the Scouts pre pared the banquet. Scoutmasters H. O. Newman and Eugene Abrams had charge of recreation. The Ira Kinards moved into their new home Saturday. The Kinards recently lost their home by fire and have built on the same spot. Mr. and ‘ Mrs. David Lee and their two children of Seneca were weekend guests of Mrs. Lee’s par ents, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Ballen- tine. Mrs. Pat E. Wise will return home this weekend from a visit with relatives in Buffalo, N. Y. and Portsmouth, Ohio. Mrs. W T ise’s sister, Mrs. S. S. Bierloy of Portsmouth will accompany her home for a visit. Sallie H. Scurry, 26, of Green wood were' held Monday from Blyth Funeral Home, Greenwood, by Rev. J. Walter Johnson and Dr. R. L. Alexander. Burial was in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. She was found fatally shot in her quarters at Laredo Air Force Base, Texas, Friday. Base head quarters said she killed herself. Lieutenant Scurry was born in Greenwood, a daughter > of Ralph and Mamie Holloway Scurry, both natives of Chappells. Survivors include her parents; one brother, William R. Scurry, and one sister, Nancy Carroll Scurry, all of Greenwood; her grandmothers, Mrs. Nannie B. Scurry of Chappells and Mrs. W. O. Holloway of Greenwood.
